This niche site idea would make me money...but there's already one great competitor

I have a great niche site idea that I believe can make me a decent amount of money. The key phrase I want to target gets many thousands of hits per month and has low competition according to Long Tail Platinum.

But the problem is, there is already a very good competitor to deal with if I were to target this main keyphrase. His site is very well done, his monthly traffic is rising sharply every month due to mostly organic searches, and the site is very informative. This is where it gets tricky:

1. He's using the exact Wordpress theme I want to use for my site. It's literally the one I would use for my site if I were to build it without ever looking at his site.

2. He has a domain name very similar to the one I want to use. The name I have seems like the most logical choice to go for regarding this product but it has one word in it that is also in his domain name.

3. He's using tablepress on his main page almost exactly like I would use it.

4. I can tell this guy is very passionate about this product. Plus, he's used this product more than I have.

However, he seems to have the following weaknesses:

1. There are several long tail key phrases similar to the main key phrase he's targeting that he is neglecting to target in posts and webpages under his website. This phrases get about 1,000 - 6,000 local hits per month.

2. He is not marketing or sharing links on social networking sites at all. I could probably dominate him in this area. There are also other techniques I can use to get quality backlinks relatively fast.

3. His posts and webpages aren't as attention-grabbing or interesting as I would aim for. I would try to make posts that are linkbaits so that they'll be easier to spread on social networking sites. I would do this along with making other posts specifically to target certain long tail keyphrases.

Should I go ahead and build this niche site even though it may be too similar to his? What are some ways I can differentiate so that it won't look like I'm copying him?

Just take action. I guarantee you that he's not worried about you, why worry about him? Because he was first?

Just take action, run your own race.

Have you checked your competitor backlinks from Ahrefs? Are they legit or "spammy looking"? If they are spam, go for it. If they are REAL links, gathered from a long period of time (2+ years) then you should think twice. But I really doubt it has THAT many powerful links.

Anyhow, just check ahrefs - analyse backlinks and see how many referral domains does it have.

About the theme/domain name - doesn't really matter. I bet you can find a better looking WP theme or better yet - let someone custom design it for you (it doesn't cost that much).

Domain choose brandable - there's no need to stuff keywords in it. The "boost" is minimal if at all.

If I were you, I'd go for it. But here's the thing: You need to produce BETTER content, you need to get BETTER links, this is the gameplay here. Nothing else. Content + links.

      I just checked ahrefs.

The website in question has only been up for almost a year and has around 40 referring domains. The Ahrefs Domain Rank is around 50ish and it has less than 150 backlinks. Is a 50 Ahrefs Domain Rank relatively high or is that kind of low?

I'm guessing someone who is competent at building traffic, aiming for several long tail key phrases within the site, and writing linkbait content could probably stomp a site with these stats?

Only 40 referral domains? Great news.

I think it's really easy to outrank that competitor. You just need to produce high quality content and then do some manual outreaching to bloggers/webmasters/resources pages + some sort of broken link building.

What if those 150 Backlinks (from 40 referral domains) are from High PR and High Quality Pages?
OP, check the backlinks yourself and let us know if the site owner has spammed the 50 sites to get backlinks from them?

You only have one competitor? Wow. You're in good shape and better than most people who look to enter a thriving market (the market is thriving isn't it?)

If it's only one competitor there's no way he's filling the needs of the whole market, solving all the problems, taking advantage of all marketing channels and covering all the niches.

You've already found niches and niche markets he's not covering already. I'm kinda surprised you still have doubts about it. Just add a little creativity, some tweeking (not twerking) - and you're good to go.

Again I congratulate you for accepting the challenge. Many people tuck their tail between their legs and run when facing such a challenge. Instead of running from a little competition - you equip yourself then you run too it (like Davide did Goliath).

I'm now giving you a military style salute. - Peace!
