All these search engines as we know today will look different in few years. Today when you enter toyota on google....you get links to sites but unless you click on those links you pretty much have no idea what's inside. That is a lot of waste of time (and clicks).

I believe these search engines will have to give us something better.... when I enter toyota...google would have to know (some how - maybe thru me picking a category) that I want to buy toyota...and then google page should show me the price, mileage, etc for the car.

Today I do toyota craigslist and they show me toyota links from all over the country....it is useless....I want to see toyotas in my area and I want to know price, mileage, condition before I click. Why should I click 10 clicks to see what I want?

There is a need for cutomized search engines, so when I enter iPod then show me best buy site with price of iPod. When I enter honda, show me a delear's site in my area with price. You've got the idea.

What do you guys think?

So you want them to read your mind? Or just show you results in your area more?

Why not just search 'honda baltimore' or whatever your city is?

try doing honda baltimore on google, see what you get. Do you get prices? mileage of the car, does it tell you what the condition is? Does it give you anything useful? All it does is that it gives you a link and you will have to click on it to see what's inside....

All this will change...people want more from search engines now. Just keep yourself prepared for it.

It sounds like you want a decision engine.

      Hi jkiley,

I tend to disagree with you on a few points. You might be interested in mileage and prices, while I'm interested in locations, phone numbers and maps to nearby dealerships. Right now Google does an excellent job if you make the effort to be explicit about what you are looking for. Most people have already figured this out and more are learning each day.

I also disagree that Google just gives you links, They give you the page title and description of what you will find on that page. Not all webmasters take full advantage of it, but it certainly is more than just a link. In addition, if you are shopping, Google also provides highly relevant ads on the result pages that often include that exact details you are looking for, provided you adequately express yourself.

You can't expect highly relevant information if you enter an ambiguous search term, you will always be limited by your inability to communicate effectively. In addition, the search engine cannot index information that does not exist on the web page. It's up to the website owner to provide what you see in the index. If the search engines started creating stuff out of thin air you wouldn't be able to trust it.

Besides, there are already sites that provide the information formated the way you suggest search engines will become, they are called directories and they have been around much longer than Google. It's not a new idea and many sites have already done a great job of it, they're are not likely to ever be as ubiquitous as a search engine like Google.

If the search engines gave you the information that you are wanting, then what would be the use of the web pages? What you are expecting is kind of like looking in the phone book to find out if someone is home. I don't think that is the job or point of the phone book, or the search engine. But, I could be wrong.
