Confused about keyword research software

Hi guys,

For the past few days I've been playing around with Long Tail Pro, Market Samurai and Traffic Travis, all trial or free editions.

I've looked around a lot and I've seen that most people prefer MS over LTP and barely anybody recommends TT. But that's not how my experience has been so far.

MS only allows for 1 seed keyword and their keyword generation tool only outputs keywords without any relevant data. My experience pretty much ended there.

LTP seems much better as it outputs suggested keywords along with CPC, local searches and advertiser competition. You can even filter keyword by number of words which is a useful feature. The problem is you can only analyse each keyword separately, there's no upfront indication of how hard it might be to rank for that keyword and stuff like social shares data is missing.

TT doesn't allow you to filter keyword by number of words but you can easily export the data to Excel, filter it there, import it back into TT and compare all of the good looking keywords at once. From there you can filter out the ones that are too competitive. This way you are left with a nice list of good keywords that should be easy enough to rank for along with a wider set of data than LTP offers (although LTP has some that TT doesn't).

I guess MS is better at post-website stuff with their content idea modules and such and LTP is just a basic long tail keyword suggestion tool with the possibility of competition look-up.

I'd love to hear your takes on this, but shouldn't this kind of software mostly suggest keywords, analyse them and then analyse competition based on the most important ranking factors?

Thanks!

I think most of what you said is spot on.

for me personally, all these programs do is save you time when it comes to research. For those things you're missing, you can easily do it more manually, like using google search to get your own list together and make your own comparison charts.

I really like Traffic Travis, especially when you're trying to breakdown the backlink profiles for sites in the top 10 results, and deciding how many sites have that word in the anchor, title, and URL.

When I look for longtail keywords, I type a few variations in and see what's ranking for those phrases in Google. It's more of a manual process, but it'll get you the same results. LTP is nice for that, but it's not necessary. It does pay off to read some of the articles on the sites you're competing with. Consider how many words they have, the quality of the content and etc.. Sometimes when you're using software, that element can get passed over.

    Good luck!
