Hello SEO experts, can anyone confirm what I'm starting to realise, I'm in a very competitive niche?

my site is The Card Project | IDLoader

I have plenty of articles on the main part of my site (its a BlogEngine) with free card design downloads and other useful stuff, but when I look at the 'search queries' on Webmaster tools, there are only 16 entries and they all are for quite 'off topic' subjects I've blogged about.

Should my strategy, then, be to blog about more off topic things to pick up visitors on those unusual keywords in hope that they will be interested in the main content on my site? Or if they aren't interested themselves, will the increased volume lead to my other blog articles being higher ranked?

Hello) Here my thoughts about your problem.
    1. I think you need to make few off topic things to pick up visitors (it won't be bad in any way, so you should try)
    2. Continue hardly working on your keyword promotion, you have very competitive niche, why would you try to make you keywords(just a few) long tailed. so you can try to get some niche low competition searches.

First start with the low competitive keywords related to your niche where you can get good rank easy and your website promotion will also takes place
then go for the highly or medium competitive keyword
    hope you got my point

Thank you both, and this is where I show my inexperience...

How do I proceed with that? Do I need to use a tool which will tell me what all of the keywords are in my niche? Then pick on a few and create relevant articles which use them, then I guess I wait a few days and use webmaster tools to see if that article is being 'hit'?

Trust me to pick a heavy niche!
