Google recoveries happen overnight of does it take a while?

Anyone have any idea?

For example a main keyword to my site was on around page 9 of Google for a few months and recently moved to an average of page 5 now in the past two or so weeks moving up 4 pages. Also some other keywords from the site have started popping up in webmaster tools now. I also did a lot of product page rewrites to avoid duplicate content and it seems like that may be helping things out a bit too.

Could this be a sign that recovery is possible?

Can small businesses get a break on Google?

Probably gonna try a few more weeks to see if recovery is possible.

Thanks

Penalty removal especially manual one is problematic, mostly very time consuming to get tem removed, cos google have to make sure you will not try something bad again, so they will play with you for a "some" time to give you a lesson is it not worth to play with them again (: Of course recovery is always possible,it all depends it was your first time or not, did you get any notification in GWT ?

Penguin seems the likely culprit for the site, SEO company I was also working with to clean up the site thought so too. They didn't send any messages in GWT. We did have a number of web directory and article links but have started disavowing everything around March up until now and have looked extensively on sites like ahrefs, majestic seo and Webmaster Tools to try to find every link that looks questionable.

We got some removed as well and anything we were unable to remove we disavowed. 100's of domains now in my sites disavow file. I also recently went through our product pages and tried to add more content and change anything that could be seen as duplicate content in case Panda has any effect on the site as well, Penguin seems like the number one thing though. Consensus also seems to be that a Penguin refresh is needed to see results from disavowing. It seems like a Penguin refresh may be coming soon though.

The only thing Google does overnight is kill hopes, dreams and ambitions. Everything else, there's a 12 month waiting list.

It seems like Google is helping big brands on the web like Amazon and hurting small businesses lately.

...and that is becasue Google is returing the big brands in the search results as their testing tells them that they are the sorts of sites that searchers want.
.... but then again, I have no idea what your response has to do wit the OP's question.

That was a little off topic. I was just responding to the post above it and I still hope recovery is possible and that the next Penguin update can give some recoveries to websites that are waiting for it.

It depends why your website ranking has dropped if it is a penalty or just a matter of your competitors working hard, in any case, you should just focus on building good original content and quality back links, and your website should recover with time. If it is due to a penalty it could take some while.

It has been months now, maybe around a year. Penguin is suspected to be the main reason and we have disavowed just about all questionable sites/domains we've found linking to our sites. My site still is on page 1 with Yahoo and Bing but as can be imagined those don't bring in too much traffic and it seems Google has gone way to the top with search engine traffic.

To give a boost I also went through product pages and made more original listings so it can work better with Panda and also more deteiled pages, etc

My sites domain authority actually looks higher than some of the sites ranking on top for some keywords. It seems like if penguin penalty removed it has chance to get back to top pages with keywords. Some sites in the top 3 pages even look a little outdated, anyway hopefully it can climb up soon. I know some other sites also seem to be waiting on a Penguin update, it seems like a topic seo community is keeping an eye on.
