I am in the process of launching a company that will be active in 50 cities.
I am a little confused on the best practice to achieve good local search results with a national website?

Good local search results come from talking about the location in an exact unique page. This means you might want a page for each city that is unique where you talk about your company in that city.

If you are launching with a unique website with a good quality then no need to immediately boost the ranking. Anyhow you can think about the off page seo work

    Try off page SEO.
Off page SEO refers to techniques that can be used to improve the position of a web site in the search engine results page (SERPs).
Off page SEO gives them a very good indication on how the World (other websites and users) perceive the particular website. A web site that is useful is more likely to have references (links) from other websites.
    Good luck!

Local SEO is all about a physical address. With out it you pretty much won't come up for a local based search. So you would have to local SEO 50 times. 1 for each state.
