duplicate content on landing pages

I am going to create a number of geo targeted landing pages, and wanted to get advice on duplicate content.

The main bulk of the text will be the same for each, with new optimised images and geo specific text the only differences. These will sit on the same domain, so -

mydomain.com/hat-maker-kent
mydomain.com/hat-maker-surrey
mydomain.com/hat-maker-essex

How does google view duplicate content like this and should I use rel="canonical" in the header?

Many thanks

Try doing subdomain.mydomain.com instead or else doing multiple domains. Most people have been struggling with the innerpage strategy like this as it doesn't seem to be something that is long lasting. Other option is get a domain for each city.

I don't agree with the sub-domains, just use sub-directories since they're now the same thing and its less work.

I believe you will be fine with your current outline OP. I have a similar set up and i use duplicate content on my pages. Seems to be working so far, they're ranking in the serps without an issue. But i don't have that much time with it, so maybe ill get punished later. So i am not the most valuable adviser, maybe someone who has tested it a little longer can chime in on the duplicate content issue.

Looks like all of your pages would be optimized for different localized keywords, aiming for top positions for different cities. So most of the content is duplicate, from the search engine's point of view they are relevant for different set of user queries.

Probably a 50-50 chance of being labelled as dup.

You're talking about: Default duplicate content on landing pages but...
you can't have "landing pages" but only 1 landing page per 1 domain.

And yes, that is how Google defines "duplicate content" whereas identical
pages are generated and used by the same site.

I guess your talking about the Home page. A landing page is a page that traffic is funneled into, it doesn't have to be a Home page.

Example, an About Us page ranked in Google SERPs is a landing page, it's the page traffic landed on.

I don't think such a site would do well in search engines for a long period of time which has lots of pages with basically similar content with the only change being that of place. Imagine how easy it would be for anyone to make such sites and have lots of pages on the site using this method. If you come across such a site yourself belong to another person, you wouldn't consider it a good quality site, would you?
