Authority has to originate from somewhere (authority backlinks).

Yukons right.

I could make a website on my desktop, but if no one sees it, those internal links wont really go anywhere. However, you can rank in the serps, but you won't really see any traffic since you'll be below page 1, even at spot 11 it won't do much for your overall wealth.

is getting backlinks simply placing your website's link on a blog, forum, and other websites?

does the owner of the page/domain have to accept my link before it's considered a backlink?

what's a white hat seo way to accumulate many backlinks in a short amount of time?

If the niche is not competitive, may. If it is competitive, it will never rank without good back links.
