Relevant forum profile backlinks?

Hello. I started posting thoughtful comments on forums that are relevant to my website. I included a backlink in my signature with diverse anchor texts on the different forums. I also included a backlink to my website on my profile page. I then read later that forum profile backlinks are bad so, I deleted the profile backlinks. The next day I woke up to see that my SERP had dropped 2 pages for my search term. Is this just coincidence or did removing all the profile backlinks actually hurt me instead of helping me? Should I put the forum profile backlinks back in and see if my rankings go back to where they were or just wait it out and see if things improve on their own?

Probably just coincidence. I would NOT hit the panic button.

I'm no SEO expert so don't quote me, but it seems like you are doing things the right way. Forum links are bad these days when you spam 10,000 forum profiles with your link using automated software.

Thanks, guys. I am not creating backlinks anywhere using any automated software or system. I do everything manually. It just seems like I go up three pages and then back down two pages and then up two pages and back down two pages or one page, etc. I guess I don't have enough backlinks to stay up when I go upwards on Google.

Another question. My website is built around a directory of post-secondary schools with articles on how to find the best ones for the niche I am in. In my case, is it worthwhile to leave thoughtful comments on blogs and forums of edu websites with varying anchor text backlinks since my website is built around colleges and such?

I believe it is not coincidence, but since you have removed them, then keep them that way.
