TV Rank: Google Gets Patent On Using What You're Watching To Influence Search Results

This is a small step but you can begin to see where google might go to lower the importance of backlinks (way into the future I think)

Anyway heres TVRank

A computer implemented method for using search queries related to television programs. A server receives a user’s search query from an electronic device. The server then determines, in accordance with the search query and television program related information for television programs available at a location associated with the electronic device during a specific time window, a television program currently being displayed in proximity to the electronic device, wherein the television program related information includes program descriptions for a plurality of television programs being broadcast for the associated location.
Given that Televisions now are forms of computers able to hold all kinds of information about your viewing habits this could get much wider in scope..

Interesting what if people opt in for some data to be shared from their tablets. Personalized rankings based on the books you own?

That patent was most likely based on GoogleTV since it was filed way back in June 30, 2011, so it was most likely invented at least back in 2010 (or later) which is the same time GoogleTV was released to the public (coincidence?).

Anyways, webpages can be optimized for GoogleTV, there's a whole list of things that can be done to format webpages for any size TV screen & page navigation with the arrows keys on a PC keyboard which simulate an offline TV remote control arrow keys. I had a bunch of bookmarks saved a few years ago on the GoogleTV subject.

Looks like Google is pushing towards Android for set top boxes so that could be a game changer since Android is so popular & connected to Google.

Might be interesting to see what happens with that but I doubt it will impact the SERPs anytime soon.

One obvious flaw in this technology...no?

not everyone is the same person and has the same psychological reaction to google results and unless Google are going to suggest that you must have an individual tv, how can they actually make this a big enough factor to throw away backlinks or even make it a big reason to factor in the algo?

What happens when your little child is watching cartoons and you start getting childish related results, i dare say the alternative way around either.

    psshh...

I imagine it would be just that, personalized SERPs, the same as any web browser with cookies/history.

TVs today have built in content locker apps that force viewers to login to social networks to be able to watch the whole video, so there's that personalized thing already going on.

Television by itself is vanishing. We now consume movies, music, books and traditional TV through one computerized display - Flat screens and tablets.

Thats whats interesting to me not the patent on TVrank by itself. once people opt in to sharing certain data then we will have a search results that can hook into the history of what we read, listen to and watch.

Right now I do a search for "links" and I get some results about transportation and golf. If My search was tied into what I watched and read I would get results more in keeping with backlinks and SEO.

    In short:

I think TV will become far more Search integrated, about a decade before Search will become TV integrated.

The only thing in the way right now, is the speed at which they can lay Cat5 cables.

Guy at the TV store already sold me this little gadget, that turns my TV into a full browser and keypad. How long before that's standard? Next week, or it already is.

No but ranking based on the last Toaster, Microwave or Washing Machine you bought, might indeed be a positive.

I guess the end game would be to present each individual user with an entirely unique set of results, based on things like.

      Search Query
      Age/Sex/Location
      Language
      Social
      Cultural
      Economic
      Intellectualism

All working together to deliver the best result for the end user.

You can tell a lot about a person, if you know what Toaster, Microwave or Washing Machine they buy.

Wouldn't change too much in my opinion. They would still need a browser/search engine based algorithm in order to figure out what content/websites are relevant to the cartoons or sports you are watching. It'll be no different than basic remarketing that is in use today.

So you watch sports? Doesn't matter unless you can pin-point a station/program to website content (i.e. ESPN -> ESPN.com). Trying to assume that TV will actually determine rank for websites is fairly absurd in my opinion. They will integrate this for remarketing purposes and possibly things like FB has in their 'Look-A-Like Groups' but nothing as far as Google/Search Engines are concerned.

I hate all the little personalized information bubbles that already exist on my internet. I go on youtube these days, and click on the home page, only to see all the things my son likes to watch on my computer, nothing that I am interested in at all. I have to sign out of Google to see a less "personalized" internet. I find it annoying enough already...horrible that they are now going to extend this idea over to my other devices, and then send it on to Big Data I suppose.

It's the race to the bottom for big corporate.

Wait until 2015 when Microsoft drops support for Win7 like they did for XP (it's happening) & MS stops selling offline OS & moves to an internet based OS (big data).

Personally I use Incognito & run CCleaner.
