Upload the robots.txt file to the root directory.

It probably can't be done. You can always check to see if you have one already,
but editting it would not be a possibility with free wordpress.

Contrary to popular belief, you don't need one. Granted, WP is so bloated
with crap that gets generated, you would have a ton of stuff indexed that would
be meaningless. But meaningless does not mean it hurts, nor does it mean it
would ever show up in SERPs. Google is pretty dang smart in 2014.

One more reason to not have a free wordpress blog. Or even use WP to
        beging with.

Blogspot, on the other hand, does a nice, tidy, and PERFECT robtos.txt with
their free blogs. Google has this stuff all figured out, especially as to what they
want. Even if I was to use WP on a custom domain, I would not. Not in a million
years. I'd go for blogspot and a custom domain in a heart beat.

Of course ditching WP and blogspot in favor of a real, money making site, well,
        that's priceless.

Then you can robots.tx yourself into oblivian.

I have a robots.txt just because that's what google looks for first. You get a
crawling error if you don't have one, most likely. But it's not a real error. Google
assumes it's there and looks for it. I keep mine blank. Done and done.
