Only 7 Spots Left on Google's 1st Page

I've noticed for more and more searches, fewer and fewer website listings are available on Google's first page results.

There are still 10* listings. But ...

Google uses 1 spot for itself to promote Google images / Youtube videos.

Google takes a 2nd spot for itself to promote Google books.

Then Google takes a 3rd spot to list recent blog posts.

Sure, your blog could get listed in the blog spot, but doubtful. So down to 7 SEO spots left, and probably diminishing even more in the future.

* Actually, it is worse. There are 10 listings AFTER the top spot is taken by Google to list recent news stories. So the only SEO spot starts in placement #2 on the page.

I'm looking at a search result with 7 lines of text and links taken by Google at the top of the page for its news stories. So placement #2 is now where placement #3 used to be on the search results page.

      Brian,

Talk to you in 6 months' time when there will only be 6 spots left!

Seriously, though, Google is just leveraging its dominant market position. I never thought I'd say this, but I hope Microsoft's Bing takes off and gives the Big G some serious competition.

It'll be interesting to see if the European Union has a look at this. They're very hot on giving consumers a fair choice.
