Aged domain ranking opportunity?

Hi Guys,

I'm not really up-to-date with SEO, so have a question regarding domain age.

I've recently bought a niche domain with pretty decent search volumes, and just found out that it's actually an 8 years old domain that has been down for a while but has been getting some results and many backlinks back then.

My initial plan was just to create a landing page with opt-in and sales in follow-up, but now I'm wondering whether it may be worth putting in the extra work to rank it again.

I have a website which has been in 1st place for some keywords for a long while. A few years ago I got bored with it and had other problems as well including data loss on the server, so I abandoned the site for like two years, but kept the domain.
Naturally the domain quickly disappeared from SERPs. After like two years later my old system administrator told me that he found an old backup of my site and was able to completely restore it to its lost state. The strange thing was that in like two weeks after the site got restored, it fully regained its original rankings, after a two years long complete gap, and have been there ever since.

Now I'm wondering whether I could achieve something similar with this 8 year old domain?

I have a few problems though:
- I don't have the backup of the old site (it wasn't even mine back then)
- I can see some info in Google Wayback Machine what content it had, but it wasn't mine. Of course I could rebuild the same URL structure and rewrite the content
- I can see in MOZ and AHREFS that the site still has some backlinks from around between 2006-2008, but I don't know their current value
- the main keywords are pretty good, but I don't know whether there is any way to find out whether the website ranked well for these keywords 8 years ago
- the domain is an exact-match domain for the main keyword, and I know that they are getting downrated by Google nowadays.

What do you think about this situation?

Mike, You already have been tested the importance of age domain with your own domain name, so you should go for it as well. These days, quality of backlinks is much important so first of all you should check value of backlinks, search traffic for keywords. After that move to create to fresh content.
