I think you're both right on link velocity.

A spike isn't bad unless it's unnatural. If Google sees thousands of links coming in from reputable news sites, they'll probably see it differently than...

Do you really think not using relevant/kw terms in heading tags makes no difference? I understand not wanting to overoptimize or not wanting to be extremely unnatural through keyword stuffing, but...
