Google doesn't rank websites, they rank individual web pages. You do need to promote your web pages and blogging is one of the many excellent ways to do that.

Build your list with a free give-away, then promote a real product THROUGH your list. Give them the information they want and need, as you slowly hand them a few soft sells for a related product....

I much prefer to build my lists by selling relatively low cost or introductory products. This type of list takes perhaps a lot longer to build than with free incentives, but lists of proven buyers...
