Hi Folks,

Recently I did a complete upgrade of my primary website (about the 8th in it's 10 year history).

It left me wondering ... just how many people *really know* how to upgrade their websites safely and without potential loss of data.

More so - how many people really know *when* they should update their websites....

PS. Not mentioned in this report, but you could also use the same strategies to upgrade websites for 'offline business' and build quite a nice little income for yourself. Just think a little outside of the box.

Wondering when you upgrade your website is the same as wondering when to format your hard drive and start over again. It's a difficult decision to make.

18 to 24 months sounds pretty reasonable. A lot of huge websites (like ESPN.com) change their look once a year. But they obviously have a huge staff of programmers to get it done. In our case, every two years is reasonable. Although it's interesting that many people simply change their WordPress theme and call it a day.

Joe,

I always have a backup of everything on my website on my PC; so when I upgrade the look of the site, it's just the "look", not the content.

If you're suing Wordpress then a new template can be enough - just a fresh look to keep things alive.
