It depends what niche you are targeting along with the demographic. It will vary from market to market.

It has decent traffic. Mostly female. Choose your landing pages accordingly. Your marketing has to fit the market or you won't succeed.

Pinterest is the most amazing referrer for my website ever. I have 9000 FB fans, 11000 Twitter followers, and I see more than 5 times the traffic from Pinterest, then the other two combined.

I created an account just so that I could share this with you. I'm in the photography tutorial niche, which is very popular, and I've picked up some very advanced Pinterest marketing techniques, I've managed to grow to 2300 followers. About 300 of those in the last 4 days. If you have a featured image, and you can overlay some text on it, which will spark readers interest, there's no reason why you can't be on pinterest.

Well pinterest is one the newest social sites that help to generate traffic to websites. When you post links on pinterest, people click through it and then land on the original website which is your website. That's how you get or drive traffic using pinterest.

You may try PinSomo. It's similar to Pinterest, but is not competing against Pinterest, you're working with it to generate more traffic on YOUR site as well as theirs! Google it for PinSomo

I find using Pinterest is a great traffic getting machine. I have over 72,000 pins. The traffic is far better then facebook and twitter. I use it on my dog site. The dog site has 9000+ products from Amazon By far the best results from Pinterest then many paid advertising. Works better on evergreen websites like sites related to any animal dog cat,diet ect I even send to my diet blog and find some sales via clickbank. If you link your main site to your blog it will bring even greater sales. Pinterest must be in your advertising. Hope this helps

A couple of other points:

1. try to get accepted to some Pinterest's travel (and wedding) group boards (so you can pin to hundreds of thousands without having to build a huge following at first).
2. share/repin travel pins and add a link to your travel guides site in the description (ie click here to download a free travel guide about ...)

I've never really tried hard with Pinterest before but after reading some of these posts I now see the potential visitors that I have been missing.

The shortest and simple way to generate good amount of traffic is use of images. Pinterest is designed in such a way that images grab the most of the attention. If you can create some great quality images with call to actions, you can generate good amount of traffic. Be creative and unique in terms of image content and design.

Pinterest is great source of your traffic, only if you use/pin photos related to your offer. Create a strong account (good ratio of followers to following - more followers than following). Start with group boards.

Do you need ten thousands of pins to get traffic? I have around 1500 or so now, but only got 150 followers, doesnt seem to bring in much traffic either

I am quite surprised that you are mostly mentioning traffic - what you need to look at, is conversion. I can tell you from my own personal experience that conversion through Pinterest in much worse than Facebook. Actually - it's just terrible !

Also, pinterest is very quick to close accounts so if you pin more than a few pins a day - be prepared for an account closure. I know you are not spamming but the people who manage Pinterest just do what they feel like. Don't say that I didn't warn you. Sometimes I have the feeling that they only like people who pin pictures of nice fluffy cats.

Pinning is extremely time consuming activity - are you going to outsource it ?

I can tell you that getting into group boards today is much much harder than it used to be due to spammers so all the best to you in trying to get into large group boards.

In general - it's a nice traffic source but it has a lot of limitations. You will also notice that I am not trying to sell you anything (as oppose to other people).

Its a good traffic generator if you do in proper manner like:
Like 20-50 pins/day
Repin 20-40 pins/day
Comment on pins

facebook , google plus and reddit can give you much more traffic as compared with pinterest

Just create many separate board for your every single category and increase follower with same interest or of another interest. Post regularly and communicate with peoples.

If you are selling a visual product then Pinterest can be effective if you are selling accounting services or software its less effective.

It is the best Traffic Generator for me . 90% of my visits are from pinterest and I get 11K-13K visitors per day . few months ago I bought 13 pinterest accounts with 5k targeted followers on each of them and i generate sales through these visitors.

For me and this is just my opinion, I'd rather use Linkedin, Twitter and Facebook compared to Pinterest! Why? Simply because the user friendliness of the site is not that so easy to learn yet compared to the 3 mentioned. Considering that your prospects are not that internet savvy. So better avoid using Pinterest. IMHO
