Facebook Custom Audiences without Buying FB Traffic?

I am a bit confused on Facebook custom audiences.

I am wondering something:

Can I put a facebook custom audience pixel on my website (that gets organic traffic) and thren go to facebook and get a lookalike audience after the pixel has gathered info?

Or do I have to run facebook traffic to the pixel to get it to collect?

Also, if I can do the former, can I actually view the people on FB who have visited to look at my demographic?

    You could build custom audience with any traffic source, but you'll need to run Facebook ads to use the custom audience (and Lookalike audience). You can't view the people that make up the custom audience.
