There are a few esoteric caveats of Google keyword Planner which are known by a few. Initially, I used to rely a lot on Google Keyword planner but with time and efforts, I came to know that Google Keyword planner's data is not real-time. Its outdated. Its about 3 months old. It is the most handiest tool if you are planning to do google adwords campaign.
But for SEO and other purposes, you should put yourself in the shoes of your leads and customers. For that matter, you should focus more on long-tail keywords.
With all that said, I believe that Google auto-suggestions are the best resource for keyword research i.e. as you search on Google, it suggests you different stuff. This basically mirrors what people are actually typing to search.
    Hope this helps! Cheers!

How to do POWERFUL Keyword Research in ONLY 10 Minutes - YouTube

      Hope that helps!!
Have to thank you Brendan for this amazing new method. I will definitely implement this keyword research method into the one I use.

The way I do it is pretty much how you said Brendan most of us do:

      1. I first go to Keyword planner then on the first option I enter in the keyword I want to get more ideas on.

      2. Then I filter the results by highest search volume

      3. Then I choose the keywords that have high search volume and a high search bid

      4. I enter in that keyword in quotation marks in Google to see how many competing pages there are.

      5. Using the SEO quake plugin I check to see the PR, and backlinks of the top 10 sites on the first page.

If I feel I can outnumber the backlinks of my cometitors then I'll choose those keywords.

I use LongTailPro (Desktop) and Keyword Revealer (online). LTP is easy to use and user friendly. But costs more (97$ one time + $17 per month) .KR is only 29$ per month. You can use my KR on test purpose if you want
