Social Media vs discussion forum

Are discussion forums becoming replaced by social media (esp Facebook)? I'm looking at how the internet has changed over the last say 7 years. Has putting a discussion forum on a website become any less relevant? I'm finding oddly little about discussion forums online, though I do realize that they need massive amounts of traffic that most aspiring internet marketers cannot acquire.

Thoughts?

Forums will never die and fb can't replace them.
The problem is, every single good topic has already a lot of forums.. that's the real problem: competition
you can't stand it out if you put just another xyz forum, you have to come with something creative with quality unique content.

I think Warrior Forum is the best example that "no". Take a niche, for example American Football, there are people who'd rather subscribe to a page publishing news about that topic on Facebook, others who'd rather get tweets about that, others who would like to discuss it over a forum, and another group of people who would rather watch videos about it on YouTube and get in a fight in comments

The way I see it, is that it's complementary.

Forums are best way for gathering people in same niche, sharing knowledge and experience. You don't need massive traffic for monetizing - e.g: 10K+ visitors / mo. You only need targeted traffic for monetizing and getting better conversion rate.

I don't think forums will disappear anytime soon! Social media did manage to change the online world a lot in the last few years, but forums are still very relevant and facebook or other platforms could never totally replace them
