So yesterday, I went to GA to check out the traffic for my site. I typically get between 3-5K uniques a day so it was a bit of a surprise when GA showed me I was close to 13K for the day.

Awesome, something went viral. Now to check what it was and where the visits came from.

That's where it got odd.

According to Google, the traffic was going to a 2 year old page on my site, 95% of the visitors were coming from the US, and visiting 2.5 per visit and were being referred to my site via 2 spots. A url that is not mine and Facebook.

The url is not my domain, but when I went to check it out, it was directed to the page (on my site) I had gotten all the visitors from. I did try to dig in further to Facebook, but couldn't figure out who or where within Facebook my site was getting referred.

Here are my questions:

1. Why would someone buy a new domain and redirect it to someone else's? Are they trying to build up juice to it and sometime in the future they'll redirect back to their own content?

2. Is there a way to do advanced searches in Facebook? I'd love to know where the traffic was coming from (page, group, individual). I know it wasn't a post share, since nothing showed up in my Facebook analytics.

Don't get me wrong, I love the extra traffic...I just want to find out how/why it was coming from.

I wish I knew. I'd track them down and get them to do it every day . Then again that huge boost in traffic didn't give me any bump in Adsense

Perhaps that page is useful to something relative to the niche of the person sending the traffic, and they may have shared the page to add value for their users. Did you try using Social mention. Perhaps it can find something. I am not sure if it would work, but its worth a try.

  • Unfortunately, nothing turned up. I guess it was a 1 day campaign since the traffic showed up one day and was gone the next.

Hopefully they sold alot and try the paid post again.

  • It's happening again today. As you can see, my traffic was coasting along averaging 100-150 per hour (typical Friday traffic) until 3 PM, then the traffic started showing up again.

Again, no issue with the traffic since my bounce rate has remained level at 3%. I really want to find out who is sending it there. LOL, I want to thank them and find out how they are doing it.

    • Here is GA from the other day. Both days it looks like they kicked off the ad around 3 PM my time and maxxed out for a few hours...then drops back to normal.

Has anyone else run into this type of traffic flux...from Facebook?
