Question re: LinkedIn

I've seen a lot of people talk about this tool called "Social Emailer" - it basically targets LinkedIn groups and allows you to email the members in said group all at once.

I wanted to know your opinion on the legitimacy behind this tool - I've seen a few people on LinkedIn use it on me, and their reviews & testimonials are obviously purchased or heavily biased with an affiliate link.

I've been see-sawing between the Pros & Cons and given it's price (497$) I feel I need a few other opinions before I commit.

Have any of you heard of it before? What are your thoughts? Does it break LinkedIn's TOS?

Well it uses the system of going into groups and messaging them - it's a technique used to acquire new leads. LinkedIn allows you to message someone who you share the same group with so it's not quite like spam emailing.

It's essentially using that technique on steroids, I could see how it would be a huge problem but at the same time you have the opportunity to reach more people with a wider net with a specific message.

Is it a coincidence that one of the "testimonials" for this product uses the phrase "Socialemailer software has put me on steroids"? Hmmm...

As someone who's supposed to be an unbiased party looking for "advice," it's strange that you're defending this product after someone points out a few flaws and use a phrase like "It's essentially using that technique on steroids."

Unbiased people don't use hyped up marketing terminology like that.

Sounds like a shameless self promo to me.

And for the record, that sales page looks incredibly shady. There's not even any copy on it! $497? I wouldn't even throw $27 at it.

I apologize Jennifer if you think that I'm self promoting. I was genuinely interested in the product and my "defending it" was more looking for justification as to why or how it may work for me.

I've decided to stay away from the product, after consulting a few colleagues of mine in the industry I came to the same conclusion that it's just too shady for my tastes. I run an honest business and it seems like something that could hurt me in the short/long term.

As for the terminology I used, chalk it up to an overloaded work schedule with a lack of "non-marketing" vocabulary at the time haha.

I agree with pertinax and would recommend focusing on growing your network legitimately and then you can message them direct either through the platform itself or by exporting their email addresses into a third party.

If you don't want to do this laborious task yourself - you can always outsource it using oDesk or the equivalent probably cheaper than buying Social Emailer anyway!

So the trade off is being able to cast a wider net and accelerate your marketing curve versus being labeled as a spammer and making a bad first impression.

I like to err on the side of caution as well. Even with LinkedIn Premium paid membership, it appears like we are limited to only 15 Inmail messages per month which is a slow road for $59 per month.

Is there any happy middle ground here where you can follow best practices and etiquette, manually message/connect with even 50 - 100 hand selected people per month without violating TOS or paying exorbitant monthly fees?
