Twitter has now OPENED up Direct Messaging. Previously, you can only DM people who follow you back.

    I don't think it will be that huge, Twitter direct messages is a function that was already spammed to death and most people will just mark as read all messages or never look at them. With this update even more spam will fill the DM inbox, and even if you want to do real marketing with high quality stuff, your message will be surrounded by other spammy messages that it might not ever get noticed.

    Why? Who reads DMs? I never have, and I never will. It's all spam.

    They're probably doing this to divert spammers. It will work. Spammers will clog the DM line even more, which means your message will drown.

    You realize this is opt-in, right? As in, it's not open for people by default.

    if you wanted to send a Direct Message to the ice cream shop down the street about how much you love their salted caramel flavor, you’d have to ask them to follow you first. With today’s changes, the ice cream shop can opt to receive Direct Messages from anyone; so you can privately send your appreciation for the salted caramel without any barriers.
    I don't think the average Twitter user is going to activate this. Businesses will have the option to block spammers.
