Are You Ready for Mobilegeddon on Google?

Just so everyone knows, Google's latest algorithm change will roll out in a few hours to highly favor responsive websites on mobile devices. That means if your site is not mobile ready, a lot of folks behind you in the search engines are about to leapfrog right on past you on mobile devices. And since that's around 60% of all users, that's not going to be too much fun.

Are you mobile ready? Check here to find out from Google directly.

Also, this is a live update so the results should start shifting immediately, and Google has said that this will be a much bigger blow to some businesses than Panda or Penguin (which zapped around 11% of sites). So how bad it's going to be....we can only wait and see.

On the other hand, it should give a boost to those of us who are mobile ready, so I'm personally looking forward to some of my competitors losing their search traffic on mobile (this is supposed to effect mobile serps only...not the traditional searches from tablets/pc's).

How bad do you guys think the fallout is going to be?

I'm excited to see what is going to happen. I'm thinking it will probably take a few days to really see any changes, though.

Knowing Google, the true impact of this update will probably come in waves-much like Panda and Penguin. Expect a lot of people to try to milk it for maximum publicity value for site upgrades/redeisgns though. The fear mongering will probably wane once the dust clears and it turned out to be... NOT THE END OF THE WORLD.

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.

Well, so far today I'm not seeing anything major on my sites as far as ranking goes for mobile or desktop. A few keywords have climbed a spot or two higher while others have slid a few, but nothing that I see to get all fussy over. My biggest jump was from 19 to 11 and my biggest drop was by 2 slots. Before today, almost every stat was the same in both regular and mobile.

Here's what I find interesting though...the few keyphrases I was targeting that I wasn't in the top 50 before are now in the mid-40's in mobile only...so I guess the effects have already started to some degree.

The change is really pretty simple. It's designed to make Google's search results more useful for people using it on their phones. Starting tomorrow, the algorithm will reward sites with "mobile-friendly" designs and push down those which aren't optimized for mobile viewing.
