Facebook Ads Question

This applies to all types of ads on fb that i run..

1) I notice when i set to a very low daily budget, e.g. $5 or $10, I get very cheap page likes or clicks (depending on the objective i set). However when i run ads for my clients on a bigger budget, $50 a day or $100 a day, the cost per objective increases ALOT. anyone knows why?

2) when i set a very broad targeting for my ads, i get a low cost per objective. e.g. $0.10 per page like, or 0.05 per website click. However when i start to narrow my targeting (based on custom audience), the page like, website click costs increases by 5 times or more. I thought FB charges by impressions. So if i narrow down my target, with less impressions it should be cheaper?

I make reference to custom audience, look alike attributes when I narrow my target. For example, FB insights show that married women responds better to my ads. However once I change my target to just married women, the costs starts to jump up.

Appreciate opinions. Thanks!

Hi, as per my experience the cost is always high at the top level ( audience insights ). go one level down you will get cheap likes or clicks

Have you tried using CPC instead of CPM?
Try setting the manual bid as low as possible as per you previous experience. And then run the ad, i think it will help you control your cost per click.

My Take: I don't think technically this should happen. Try and manually adjust your ad .. For example if you are selling something that people use for leisure like fashion, humor, blogs etc then try and post the ad for night only. Run it from 7 pm to 11:59 pm.. Facebook distributes your $50 or $100 a day automatically. If you want good ROI, then have a sense of what your audience wants , what time they are more active and target during those times only

    2) when i set a very broad targeting for my ads, i get a low cost per objective. e.g. $0.10 per page like, or 0.05 per website click. My answer: There are two types of ads on facebook : CPM and CPC. You should manually select either of them and manually select your bid. DO NOT LET FACEBOOK AUTO BID OR AUTO SELECT FOR YOU.
For eg: you selected CPC (cost per click) (my personal fav, I avoid CPM) : You will be shown a screen with targeting etc etc.. At the bottom of the page, there's option to bid .. Now, select manual bidding.. Facebook will show you a "suggested bid".. Now bid an amount 70-80% of the suggested bid. Fb will charge you only if someone clicks on your ad.

If you select CPM (which i find bad ROI), facebook will charge you a certain amount for every 1000 people on whose timeline your ad was visible. C'mon, maybe he was busy chatting, he didnt even notice and you had to pay!!

I make reference to custom audience, look alike attributes when I narrow my target. For example, FB insights show that married women responds better to my ads. However once I change my target to just married women, the costs starts to jump up.

My answer: The cost will go up if you narrow your interest group. Because facebook will select only people who have "married" written on their fb relationship status. I think you should target the ad on the "Age group" that should be married, say 30 - 60. Maybe they're married, contemplating marriage or stuff but haven't updated it on facebook.. You shouldn't miss out on them too!

Instead you can play with the interests, maybe write the wedding magazines names as the interests..or grocery apps, consumer durable items. Those are the things married ppl usually talk about and might be searching so facebook cookies will pick that up!

    Hope you found it helpful.

It will cost more to reach more targeted users. My best advice is to just use $5 on ads per day. The bigger budget you show FB that you have, the higher they will mark your CPC next time.
