Social Media v Website

I was contemplating creating a website to supplement my Ebay business. Then I got thinking that with all the advancement of social media , Do I really need a website ?

I have facebook pages, twitter accounts and pinterest accounts. I think that new business can be generated from these resources a lot easier than from a website. I gain extra sales from my facebook page but if i put more effort into these areas its got to be beneficial than putting all the work into getting a website started from scratch.

Also the rewards would be forthcoming quicker.

What do other warriors think ?

I think having a website to link back to is always handy - especially if you are willing to put in the work to create blogs or other items that could help with your SEO ranking.

Social media is a fantastic tool, and is much easier and faster to get going. It does require quite a bit of effort, though, make sure you are keeping everything updated and interactive. An abandoned or unprofessional profile can have the opposite effect of what you're going for.

If your business it at an initial phase then you can continue with your website. However, if you are getting alot of enquiries and only 50-60% of them are converting, then you know you need a website. When a buyer is interested in the product, he checks whether the seller is reliable, or if there is any payment / biling / refund policy, what is the customer feedback about the product, what time will it take to get the product shipped etc.

If you answer all these queries through another source, then you can continue with the social media itself. Else, the website will help you.

Im not too sure that this is true. We see a lot of so called professional websites being run by scamming companies. So websites can give a misleading impression of a company. On the other hand , a face book page can be highlighted easily to other would be users to a comapny that is unreliable . Reliability can be measured via ebay and facebook more effectively than by a website.

Does an online business really need a website when it is getting substantial sales from ebay and social media ? I don,t think so. I often purchase items for my business from companies on ebay although they have their own website.

I think the idea that a company needs a website for an online business is very much a myth. Social media are getting more and more sophsicated and they are specifically aiming there product at the online business. It also a lot easier to get followers on social media rather than a website.

This could be how the internet is changing. More and more people are searching ebay and social media for products and services rather than trawl through the internet. Recommendations via social media and feedback ratings on ebay are very good indicator of the quality of both product and company.

If you do have a website if your not on the first 2 pages of google you are just wasting your time anyway.

I personally think having a blog and linking to and from it to various social sites is the way to go. However, there is the problem, or opportunity depending on your viewpoint, of content creation and adding fresh content somewhat consistently. I will be interested to see what others have to say on this topic, especially using your Facebook account as a sales website.

Whatever is yours is yours and
whatever is not yours, isn't yours.

You don't own those social media pages
so you are operating on a rented building.

I don't need to emphasize any further on
    the provoking uncertainty.

Whichever way you look at it,
you are better off running your own
site and linking your social media
    pages to the site.

The majority of succesful bricks and mortar buildings operate out of rented buildings !! The question here is which is the most profitable cause of action . I'm in the game of accumulating profit and if that can be achieved by operating through Ebay and social media rather than an owned website so be it.

Selling on Ebay and Amazon are also operating via "rented" space, but that is by far the best way to sell your products. No one can come anywhere near to ebay and amazon sellers with their own website. I don't think these 2 giants are going away soon they are very much here to stay. So the argument is still in favour of operating via social media and ebay.

From my point of view, obviously you need a website. Why? The reason is simple. If you have a website then it make you more authorized. It will create your own brand. And I believe after being a brand your sells will dramatically increase.

Ofcourse you need social media. Because social media can generate tons of traffic for your website and some other offers. So you need to maintain your social profiles and your website simultaneously.

You have to have a website as an overview of everything. Even though your other pages (Facebook, Twitter etc) work , you have to have something as an overview to be more professional. It can also link the different kinds of social media together.
