Is it wise to do general blogging or look for a specific niche? Advise please

I'm a student and I've been blogging for fun for a long time. Well, of recent i've been getting some advise to blog about a particular thing (though i am inconsistent).
I love to write about almost anything that has relevance to me and i basically write more of stories and poems on my blog since i started it as a way to not keep my writeups to myself.
I was told that if i really want to make it in the blogosphere,to get more readership and monetize my account, that i would have to stop generalizing my blog posts and rather look for a particular niche. Thing is i don't know a particular niche to focus on, i just love to tell stories and write about random things.

Do you think i should really find an area and focus on, or keep on doing my normal generalized blogposts.

    Making money blogging is not really about focusing on a particular niche, it is more about the way you write and what you write about. If you write about random stuff about yourself or something that others won't find very interesting or helpful, you won't be able to gather a lot of readers.

    The key is to blogging is to write about things people would be interested in reading; be it helpful articles, fiction or true stories, or news reports. Once you've been able to gather a lot of regular readers to your blog, you can then figure out a way to make money of them.
