Well Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram etc are all niche platforms each doing their own(that's why many people use many of them not just one). To take on Facebook they have to basically do what Facebook does but better. It is hard at this point, they have messaging, they will have streaming. They just release a content management system like YouTube and many video creators are going to use it.

Also the ad price on Facebook seems to grow continually. Which is not a sign of regress.

I don't think Facebook will fade away anytime soon. They know how to innovate and change with the times. Mark Z. knows what he is doing and if anything he will buy up some of the up and coming apps to keep Facebook strong.

I wouldn't worry about Facebook fading for now. Maybe 10-20 years down the road things could change, but for now there is no worry with Facebook.

Facebook has 1.5 billion users. Which is more than any other social sites and Apps. In my point of view day by day Facebook becoming a part an parcel of our life. So, there is no chance of beating Facebook in near future.

  • I don't think Facebook is going away anytime soon. Especially with all the investments they've made in increasing their reach like through internet.org. Yes, they're probably fading in the US but they're still gaining a lot of user rest of the world.

Based on their recent earning report, Facebook is here to stay. Thus true we said same for Myspace

Facebook has max data, which helps to predict or create trends. So before any app/website can rise, they are already owned by Facebook. It is war - keep your enemy close .)

Yeah. There are really a lot of new social media discovering nowadays.

All of them offers different features that we can't see on facebook.

But at the end of the day, people always choose to come back to the old one, facebook.

      I agree....with you there.

there are 3 things that no one should forget.

      1) Facebook, was the first big boy on the block.

      2) everyone has the mentality that there is this new fresh better social media giant coming
that they need to be a part of that will bring better results than facebook.

      3) It is said that FACEBOOK, now receive more traffic than GOOGLE itself.

OF all the tips I just gave, number 3 is the most important. There is your clue. *ding* *ding* *ding* we have a winner!!!

    No. I don't think so.

There are still a lot of users who choose facebook instead of the new ones.

Because facebook is easier to navigate.

Facebook will stay forever. Almost everyone has an account and they use it as secondary communication to their relatives and friends/colleagues.

Facebook is here to stay (but nothing is ever permanent, look at Friendster and MySpace) for how long, there's no definite answer. One thing Facebook have over its predecessora is that it peaked at the right time. Now that the social network theme is played out, any new player coming in to the market would have to introduce something totally revolutionary that none of the big players can simply duplicate.

Nowadays Facebook's traffic is huge... and sometimes it ranked number #1 in Alexa. More 1 billion people access Facebook daily.

Facebook acquired WhatsApp and Instagram, Facebook's business became stronger. And Facebook's company is still in innovation for future.

    1) Facebook is not fading away, and never will fade away.

If anything the way marketing is working and how FB is synced in with EMAIL, its very good for marketing.

    2) The next FB is coming. Probably something bigger. I have already been to a private seminar, which I have never been blown away like that.

So facebook, is not old, and will not get old, the INTERNET WILL JUST change, and make way for the next ZUCKERBURG....just a matter of time. Just you wait and see.

For the 5 years to come, I guess Facebook might keep its #1 position, regarding the way people still use it in their private life.
In addition to that, Facebook is the best platform to generates traffic, so businesses are most likely to keep using it.
However, I'm pretty curious about the future ! Which social media will be able to beat Facebook, the giant ? Twitter ?

Facebook isn't going anywhere but that does not mean that it will always be a preferred medium for marketing. The truth is that it has never been stable for that, constantly changing the playing field has made it very difficult to adapt and maintain a useful presence. Add to that the constantly increasing costs of doing business there and it becomes obvious that it's utility for commercial purposes is becoming more and more limited, despite it's huge user base.

How many users there are on Facebook is an irrelevant metric, the only metrics that matter are how many likes your page has, how engaged they are, and most importantly how effective your reach is. Facebook as discovered a real goldmine for themselves by forcing people to pay to market to their own followers. But the costs of building followers are growing increasingly prohibitive. I'd say you need a minimum reach of at least 5000 to be able to make effective and predictable conversions. But if you use their Ads platform such a following could cost up to $10,000. Really not worth the price if you ask me.

Comparable followings can be built on Twitter for free or nearly free and they have been shown in many studies to convert better anyway.

I'm not sure what this statement means but there is 100% chance that it is being beaten already by both Twitter and Instagram in terms of being a good venue for marketing. Facebook just plain sucks anymore. It costs a fortune to build a following now, and another fortune on top of that to market to your own audience. I find it to be nearly worthless and very low converting traffic anyway. I have a page with over 6000 followers that cost me about $1500 in facebook ads to build. I did make sales there, and regularly too, but it cost me at least $10 for each post just to reach my own followers.

I'm finding that with Twitter on the other hand, it costs me nothing to reach my followers and the more I post the more I sell. My conversion rate is at least three times what it was on FB traffic. With a single account of just 1000 followers I can sell more in a week for free than I could on my 6000 follower Facebook page after paying to promote my posts.

Like all things on the internet it's time will come. Be focused on seeing what's around the corner and learning it quickly before anyone else to be the most successful (this goes for ANY type of business). To answer your question, for now Facebook is king in terms of most visited site, most sticky site and most users!
