Hiring Socia Media Managers

Hi,

I recently saw a comment on an article that I was reading. The comment says:

"The objective of inbound marketing is to create community through interaction and engagement. That, in turn, requires the ability to engage intelligently on the subject matter of the content in question. Yet most of the content curated is about topic of which the "curators" have very little, if any knowledge. The result of this is that readers have no interest in engaging with people who have nothing to offer in terms of experience or expertise pertaining to the content involved. And so the "conversation" dies in childhood, if not before. My advice - if you want to market effectively on social media, and if you can't write yourself, hire accomplished writers and experts to not only produce content for you, but to carry out the responsibilities of follow up engagement."

This has caught my attention as I was planning to hire a social media manager to build my twitter account. It also made me worried about engagement with the followers.

But when I went out looking for social media managers, I found a bunch of people managing social media accounts with themes that have nothing to do with their background or expertise. After interviewing a few of them, they all confirmed that they are the ones doing almost everything related to the day to day management of the accounts. This includes social listening, networking with influencers, curating content, engaging with followers...etc.

One of the social media managers that I interviewed told me she sometimes has to learn everything about the niche, using the internet. Like many others, her profile on freelancing websites (e.g. Upwork) suggests she's very successful doing so and that her clients are happy with what she does.

I tend to agree with the comment in that you should be familiar with the topic to be able to engage with followers. However, I can't quite understand how these freelancers are able to manage accounts in any and every topic and still keep their clients very happy.

Am I missing something here? Please share your thoughts.

Thank you!

Recently I contacted several big brands via Twitter and Facebook and the answers were quite similar: I was requested to send an email to their support.

You don't have to be very familiar with the topic to send such replies. Isn't that so?

So they are not even offering customer service? That says a lot about them.

Was your question about some technical or product-related issues?

        Yep, all of them.
