Facebook Ads: Why You Should Care and How You Can Make Money

Some companies, particularly start-ups in some industries, base the majority of their marketing strategy around Facebook advertising. That information alone should not make you splurge on some ads of your own, but you should give it some serious consideration.

Why You Need Facebook Ads

• Organic reach is generally terrible-Terrible is a polite word to use. You could also use “sucks” or an expletive in its place. Organic reach has actually been getting worse too. Unless you are a publisher (a news organization for example), very few people who have liked your Facebook page will see your posts. This can be as low as four percent. Ads reach many more people.

• People use Facebook-Billions of people use Facebook every day in almost every part of the world. It crosses demographics, age groups, and interests. Your customers are therefore probably on Facebook.

• Facebook is the biggest platform-You can buy ads on many social media platforms, but Facebook is undoubtedly the biggest.

• The targeting tools are great-Brilliant, in fact. With the targeting tools, you can focus your ads on the people most likely to be interested in your product or service.

• Facebook remarketing tools are even better-Ads that target people who have already visited your website are highly effective. They require a bit more technical knowledge to set up, but there are plenty of guides available.

• The A/B testing tools are cool too-Split testing ads are simple on Facebook. This lets you test and measure to improve your campaigns. After all, a different picture or a reworded sentence can make all the difference between a campaign that makes money and one that doesn’t.

• The ads don’t cost very much-Of course, this is relative, and it will cost more for some businesses and products than for others. Generally, however, Facebook advertising compares well with other forms of advertising.

• Get a tangible ROI from Facebook-It’s also super easy to measure the effectiveness of your campaigns. That means calculating ROI is simple. If you can double, triple, or quadruple the money you spend (or even better), why would you not do it?

• It works-If you use Facebook, you will see ads. Businesses run them because they work.

Tips for Making Facebook Ads Work

• Create and test multiple versions-Test every ad and every campaign. This includes testing the text, images, and calls to action, but you should also test positioning, targeting options, and more.

• Use targeting options that are as narrow as possible-The most effective Facebook ads are those that are highly targeted. If you want to reach as wide an audience as possible, you can while also using narrow targeting - go to the next point for details.

• Segment-If you want to target a wide audience, segment them and create unique, specific ads for each segment. This will ensure the ads are as relevant as possible for each audience group.

• Target people who have liked your page-Consider this when setting your targeting options. Campaigns with targeting like this get the best click-through rates. Obviously, if you want to cast a wider net, you will have to skip this one, but it’s something to think about.

• Test your landing pages too-Getting a click or engagement on your ad is only part of the battle. The other part - the crucial part - is getting conversions. That means optimizing and testing your landing pages.

• Add social proof-Part of making a Facebook ad campaign work is winning trust. You don’t have much text to do that though. The best tool you have at your disposal, therefore, is social proof. Use part of your ad text to tell the user how many other people use your products, or quote from relevant research for example.

• Include a powerful call to action-All Facebook ads should have a call to action. You will need to experiment with what works best. This includes the text of the call to action and the placement. You might find text in the ad script works best, or you might find a button in your image gets the best results.

• Your images must be stunning-Speaking of images, they have to be fantastic. Remember, Facebook is a visual medium. People scrolling through their timelines see tens or hundreds of images. Yours has to stand out. Think about it practically - would the image stop your finger from scrolling? If not, change it.

• Videos work well too-You should also experiment with videos as people love videos on Facebook. Videos can make a profitable contribution to your campaigns by increasing engagement and click-through rates.

• Pitch to the viewer’s emotional and rational side-This is an old-school marketing and sales technique, but it works brilliantly on Facebook. The concept is simple: Start your ad by appealing to the user’s emotional side. “Spend more time with your family” or “Look stunning on the beach this summer” are examples. Then back up your first statement by appealing to their rational side. This could involve talking about savings, features, guarantees, etc. - anything that helps the user justify their emotional interest in the ad. For example, “Spend more time with your family” could be followed by text explaining one or two features of the product that make this happen.

• Deliver what is promised-Trying to deceive a user into a click will result in one thing: a poor return on investment. You will still have to pay Facebook for the engagement or click, but you will get nothing in return. It is not worth it.

• Start with a small budget and build-Finally, start with a small budget while running the most substantive tests. As you get an understanding of what is working, you can start increasing the budget. Always measure your results, though, to ensure your ROI figure doesn’t begin to drop.

With the right strategy, most businesses, particularly those that sell to consumers, can get an ROI from Facebook ads. It is a simple platform to use and is packed with features that become more beneficial the more you use them.

Nice! I'm somewhat new in using paid ads so I've tried a boosted post once, and it worked MUCH better than expected. I will likely use more of it soon.
(Though I still do use others for marketing like Pinterest).
