Significant Changes to the Facebook Newsfeed Algorithm

Facebooks just announced substantial changes to the news feed algorithm with changes to the types of content that will be given preference in the news feed. As has been expected for a while Facebook is tending more and more towards killing organic page traffic.

Probably motivated to increase ad revenue. Also sounds particularly tailored towards taking down url only style posts.

Taken from their announcement:

Will This Impact My Page?
Overall, we anticipate that this update may cause reach and referral traffic to decline for some Pages. The specific impact on your Page’s distribution and other metrics may vary depending on the composition of your audience. For example, if a lot of your referral traffic is the result of people sharing your content and their friends liking and commenting on it, there will be less of an impact than if the majority of your traffic comes directly through Page posts. We encourage Pages to post things that their audience are likely to share with their friends. As always, Pages should refer to our publishing best practices.
With any of these style changes there seems to be significant opportunity to get on board early. Anyone think they'll make any significant changes to their social media strategies in order to capitalise on this or minimise impact?

With the sharable content in mind, there's a good point in focusing on posting stuff that would make your fan look good to its peers.
Sometimes marketers just go out and post things that make them/their product/their offer look good. In other words, put yourself in the shoes of your Facebook audience.

The newsfeed change also goes against posting external links. The algorithm sees these as low quality content.

So what I generally focus on and it's working very well for me is posting and testing content that's engaging. With the last post on one of my small pages (5k likes) I got 200% organic reach and that's not even the best performing post.

Its clear that Facebook will continue to implement policies for killing organic reach for pages.
There are two clear paths: If you are not wiling to invest in ads, you must get creative and design good content that can engage with people, its a very hard challenge.
