Using social media to drive traffic to brick and mortar

My wife and I own a small family retail store. We have a facebook page and a website, but it seems difficult to get customers through it. What advice would you offer on using social media platforms for advertising a brick and mortar business? Any good tips or tutorials you fellow warriors recommend?

    I've used Facebook and Instagram adverts to local users and within 25 miles with great results.

    Local events and cool things to see around town as well. This makes people share to their friends and the traffic will come back to you.

    What is your product/service? It really all depends because just because Facebook has billions of users, the audience there is still not very responsive to some business types and offers. Who knows...perhaps you're targeting the wrong social media platform.

      We do board games, comics, pop culture/geeky stuff. Pokémon and magic are two of our big sellers. We don't do any video games though. We do events tied to our products as well.

  • That's sounds like a fun business. I've helped a friend of mine who has a tea shop promote their game nights. Here are some of the things we did that worked.

    1. Make sure that your address, contact information, and operating hours are displayed on your website and Facebook page. Don't limit yourself to the about section. Create a post and pin it to your page whenever possible.

    2. Join local geek or gaming communities on social media. Interact with the users and occasionally talk about products, events, and your business. But don't do any hard selling. Just about it when it's appropriate and when the situation calls for it, subtly direct the conversation to your business.

    3. Feature a product or service you have, even when you don't have an event. You can make it more interesting for a wider audience by introducing some trivia about what you're selling, like when and where that board game is invented.

    4. Encourage your customers to post their picture on social media and tag your business or to leave a review.And when they leave a great post, like, share and comment

    5. When you have an event coming up, create an event page and promote it. It's often cheaper to promote and create Facebook ads for small local events so it might be worth spending a little more to let more people know about your event.

    6. Don't underestimate the power of local celebrities. We had local YouTube and Instagram celebrities draw big crowds for us simply because they recommended our event. If you have a local celebrity who is a fan, don't be afraid to ask or offer them freebies to post or tweet about your business.

      Are you adding contact information to new posts and then pinning that new post each week or just leaving the same post up for a longer duration? How do you keep the post from being eventually ignored if its the same for long?

      We do this fairly regularly. Any way to scale this up without overdoing it? How about tools to make managing this outreach easier?

      I would like examples of this too. Currently we just post events into our Facebook page and then boost the post. You have samples of event pages for businesses you could show me?
