Fell flat on my face today

So today I realized that I know nothing about social media.

My plan was to write a "Top 25 _________ " article and find 25 companies that have active social media presence with a lot of activity. I used those 25 for the article. The plan was then to try ang get them to share the post.

Well, it went good until the social media part. I've never really used facebook for marketing, and I've never even used twitter period.

I can post the article on my page... and that's about all I know how to do. I manually posted a link on each one's facbook page, and said "You made the list, please share!". Well, none of the posts even showed up on their pages so I don't know what I even did.

For twitter, I didn't even do anything because I have no idea how to tweet it to 25 different people (companies). Out of fear of looking spammy in people's news feeds, I didn't even try it.

Anyone have any good resources to really learn how to do it?

Man, the world and the social online world is not an easy place nowadays for small people and I don't think it's gonna get better any time soon... If you write to big companies or famous people the chances that you'll get a positive response is SO low... They get messages and offers all day every day and if they even read all of those, you better be someone or deliver big enough value to be in the "check later" pile...
But, sometimes you get lucky and get a fish to bite the hook... The question is, are you ready to work 10 times harder, sometimes 100 or a 1000 times harder to get what you want? If you're super smart you might find ways to outsmart the world and grab a big chunk out of the heavily guarded money rivers of the world... But how do you do that?

    Hi jimmy,

By just showing from behind the rock and asking for an applause just because you SHOWED up is as stupid as it sounds. By writing a 25 list of whatever and asking those 25 to give you a share WITH OUT ANY PRIOR interaction with them is similar to showing up from behind the rock all of a sudden!

The bottom line is you have to establish a relation or familiarity with them first. For example retweeting them or asking them EASY TO ANSWER questions on twitter etc. YOUR name must be familiar to them before you ask them for anything - even if it's a guest post pitch.

    Thanks
