Buying followers, is it a good idea?

There is a big debate going on about this in the Social Media Marketer community about this, here are some of my thoughts regarding the advantages and disadvantages about buying Twitter followers:

Advantages:

● The main obstacle when you are making yourself a name on Twitter is the difficulty to get new followers, specially if you don't have a good number of followers at the start, lets face it, people don't follow people who don't have a good number of followers, so boosting your accounts with this kind of services can help you bypass this obstacle.
● Enlarging your engagement: There are a lot of good services out there that don't just sell followers, they also sell engagement like RT, or likes, that can also be of good help for boosting our account.

Disadvantages:
● If you get too enthusiastic and buy a lot of followers, that can destroy your account reach and transform itself in another obstacle for you.
● You can get caught: Someone else could find out you have bought followers, and that can give you a very bad name and reputation, that's why you need to make sure the followers you buy are of good quality.

What do you think about all these?

I think that is a bad idea in general since you buy followers which are not interested in your page in your content. Plus there is a high risk to get banned.

I don't really see the point in buying followers because although it shows your competitors you appear to have the leading edge on them it's not true and won't get you anywhere in the long run.
There are a few dangers with buying followers:
    1) Low engagement:
Your content doesn't really get a response from anyone because let's face it, nobody cares! This puts you in danger of being marked as spam from your social media bosses and you'll be left with no credibility.
    2) Damage to your reputation:
If your genuine followers find out that you've bought followers this makes you look like a bit of an @ss in their eyes and in my humble opinion, it's just not worth the damage that it will do to your rep.
    3) Spam:
The big problem with buying followers who have no credibility is that you don't know who they are and what crappy contact they'll be flicking out to your genuine followers.
    My advice, don't do it!
Let your reach grow slowly but surely, it'll be so worth it in the long run. Good luck!

Untrue. When you engage and make conversation with others and they find value from what you have to say, they will follow you. I've been followed from simple "thank you"s and "how's the weather" replies before - directly to influencers.

The main point of social media is to be social. This is the case for both personal and business accounts. Twitter especially is conversational, so have a conversation.

If your engagement metrics are 101 likes and 50 retweets from bots or accounts uninterested in your business they are worth the same amount as 0 likes and 0 RTS.

Sorry if this reply seems like a downer, but there really is no positives to buying followers. There is a false positive that people look fondly at 101 followers rather than 5, but from a business standpoint the 5 engaged followers who are in the right circle are way more valuable to me than the 101 bots.

  • Buying followers is never a good idea. I agree with @princetotem, it's not the number of followers you have that makes people follow you, it's whether you offer something of value and whether you engage positively with other users.

It's good to keep your followers authentic because you can use your follower growth to give you a more accurate feedback on whether or not people are interested in your product or service, and your brand's voice or whether you have to improve on your offer or way of reaching out to people.

Software is generally best for trying to get followers initially. After that, just swap posts with similar pages to yours. This is in reference to Instagram only, of course. With that being said, you could buy followers if you knew exactly what you were getting. Test small before you blow your cash.

Buying followers is risky as most services sell fake followers which are useless pretty much and offer no engagement at all. You only want 100 percent REAL followers if you are buying them so you'll have to do your research.

I know of just one site that I trust for followers that I may use for Instagram and Twitter. This person has his own large accounts totaling many millions of followers between their social media accounts and they are here:

Why are you on twitter? Just focus on sharing news about your company, expanding your business network, and engaging with people. Don't buy followers. It will only reflect poorly on your business. I recall a politician was proud of having a million followers until it was revealed that over 90% of them were fake. There are also several apps around where people can check fake followers.

I agree with the general consensus here Ignacio that buying followers isn't a good idea. Not only is there little point as you're never going to make any sales, but you also run the risk of buying from a spam-generating tool which is only going to end up annoying your genuine followers.
You don't want to look like a cowboy in your industry and when you buy followers, that's what you run the risk of.
Have you thought about seeking advice from a social media strategist to see if they can improve your results?
Social media is an absolute minefield to me too so I've decided that it's time I get the help of an expert rather than risk ruining my existing following.
While it's extremely slow going, building up a following 'authentically' (seems to be a buzzword!) is what will make you more money in the long term.
Hope it all goes well for you.

  • Many believes and invest on the momentum of 'fake' till you 'make' concept.

Its good to gather 90 fakes - to get 5 average, 3 ok and 2 best say in average of 100 numbers. But researcher say that 2 best will come searching for you without the need of fake.

According to me, Buying the followers is not an good idea. It will decrease your reputation in the long-run. So always followers should be of Natural and Genuine people so that your Trust, Brand awareness of the company/Business will improve in the long-run among the market.

Great question. Well for me buying followers depend on business to business. If followers are relevant according to the audience you are targeting for your business, then it is a good idea.
If you are getting relevant consumers or audience than yo must go for it. Instead of buying you should manually target them for getting accurate number of followers.

Thanks. Hope this will help you

  • Im glad I could generate such an enthusiastic debate

I agree with most of you, in general, I think buying followers is not a good idea, specially if you buy them from a low quality service, ive seen some people out there selling 10k followers or so for less than 10 USD, those followers are probably just low quality bots that will destroy an account rather than help it.

IMO, you should prefer getting real followers. You can gain them by posting engaging or interesting content. You could also use various forums to promote your social media accounts. Buying fake followers could harm your page eventually, because it won't give you real responses or real clients.

I never understand that why people want to buy fake followers. What's the point of having tons of them? they are never going to bring conversion and engagement to your social accounts and business.
