Do you need a content marketing strategy?

Anyone who's been around for any length of time knows that you could spend all day, every day filling the various social media channels with content, but if you were to do that you wouldn't get a lot else done!

Everyone in the biz recommends putting a content marketing strategy into place to save time and make sure that each and every piece of your content is valuable, but I"m just not sure about this.

It's good to have an idea of what action you want your posts to achieve (make sales, create awareness etc) but I also think that a large part of the effective social media is that is is current, relevant and from the heart - and I don't think you can strategise around that.

What do you think? Is a content strategy really necessary or can you be effective on the hop??

A content marketing strategy is definitely a crucial thing to have. I think that when we're talking about a content marketing strategy that's current, relevant and from the heart, we're talking about an effective one that has a system for getting the latest, most relevant news in front of readers in a timely fashion.

Instead of building a content strategy around creating certain pieces with certain goals, an effective content strategy should be an attempt to communicate with users about relevant topics.

This type of strategy should include processes for how to get the latest news and information to relay to users, processes for how to write those articles in the most engaging way, processes for how to report on those items in a way that could generate business.

Ultimately, people don't like being sold to, so you can't have every single article telling people to buy the product, but if you establish yourself as a trusted authority on a subject, people will want to buy your product anyways. This method is called pulling sales instead of pushing sales.

You get people to buy something by trying to sell it - you get people to want something by actually understanding your consumer and addressing their needs effectively. If someone wants your product, they're going to buy it!

Your content marketing strategy should reflect the fact that you want to pull sales, not push sales. You should be establishing yourself as a credible authority in your field and building trust and engagement with your users by actually communicating with them genuinely about core issues. This requires actual engagement on your part - you can't just plan articles in advance, you have to be on the lookout for news that affects your target audience!

Consumers are smarter than ever. If you get yourself engaged, you'll get them engaged, and that's the most successful content marketing strategy you can have.

Selling today is the most challenging it has ever been. There is an incredible and increasing option of interactive devices, platforms and channels that potential customers use from smartphones and tablets to social networks and search engines. Investment in traditional channels such as TV, Print and Radio is declining, but they remain an essential part of integrated campaigns for many businesses.
