Is Pinterest Worth the Time to Promote my Business?

Hi all, hope ye are having an awesome day and your all your monthly goals have been reached. Ive come again to consult the oracle.
Im basically looking at every possible means to promote my business an in doing so Ive come across a little (but apparently not that little by any means) nook in the social media landscape. This nook is known as Pinterest.
I dont use Pinterest myself but my basic understanding of it is that it is like an online community where people create profiles and create thought boards on subjects that interest them, like cooking, yoga, architecture etc. These thought boards and their elements seem to be visually driven.
Im trying to figure out whether Pinterest would be a worthwhile tool to advertise and gain publicity for my business. My business provides a service, not a product and the service would not typically have a visual element to it, unlike for example wedding planning where the service has a highly visual element which would lend itself greatly to being marketed through a visual environment.
Has anyone out there had success marketing a business similar to mine on Pinterest? Could you explain the mechanics of the site and how using it may result in publicity or advertising for my brand, and what demographics use pinterest, for example, mainly women or men, what age, what income bracket and in which countries?
Is location specific and highly targeted marketing available on Pinterest similarly to Facebook or is Pinterest more of a get platform where participation itself gains you the publicity you might be working for? Thanks Guys.

Pinterest users are about 70% women and they have a fairly new but very in-depth advertising platform available now. It is very visual so you would have to find a way to work that into your service. Without knowing what you are offering, however, it's hard to say if it would make sense for your business to run promoted pins on. As far as the mechanics of the site just give it a test run or do a simple search for 'how Pinterest works'. If you decide not to do paid advertising through their ad platform, it's always a good source for free traffic if you create some boards of your own relevant to the services you offer.

Hi Publyfe. Thanks a lot for your reply and the information. Thats a good idea, I think i'll go and sign up for myself first and investigate the site from a purely user only perspective, as you say I think that will give me a good overall feel of the website and its functions and how it seems from a user perspective. Hopefully that will give me a good idea as to whether it will be of good use to me from an advertising perspective. To answer your question about whether or not my service is a visual one, I would have to say the answer is no, but I was thinking that I could possibly use memes or other such devices to publicise my business on the seemingly visually driven pinterest. Anyway thanks again.

It's really hard to say without knowing exactly what you do.

Pinterest is extremely visual - that's why cooking recipes, DIY arts and crafts do so well. And yes, most of the users are woman.

If your service is visually marketable (like the health and fitness industry for example) you could give it a try.

Hi Sam. Thanks a lot for your reply and the information. Thats a really good point, I was thinking that think i'll probably go and sign up to use pinterest for myself first and try to figure out the site from the point of view of a user, as you say I think that will give me a good idea about the website and what the draw is about it and how it seems from a user perspective. Hopefully, after this It will give me a fairly solid idea idea as to whether it will be of good use to me from an advertising perspective. You will be able to easily find out if a competitor in your niche is successfully using Pinterest by typing in your type of service into a Pinterest search. My bet is that you will find pins related to your service rather easily.

Many business services use Pinterest & "infographics" are usually their most heavily pinned which I'm sure you will see. Many times you can see infographic pins providing stats of some type that are pinned by hundreds to thousands of people. Look at what these "successful" business service pin boards are full of & create something similar.

Pinterest pins have "longevity" & people are pinning things that you pinned well over a year ago (based on my results in product niches). A Facebook post or tweet has 1-2 days longevity after you initially create them. So put some effort into creating some boards & infographics. Follow subscribers of competitor's boards as well as those pinning/repinning pins related to your niche.

Yes you can "promote" your pins targeting keywords , interest, audience, devices, genders as well as location. You can choose to target Promoted Pins to any combination of US, Canada, and UK, at the country level or at the metro level.

Before you set up your business Pinterest account - do some searches for Pinterest guides as there are some excellent free ones on different sites. (Example - How To Use Pinterest For Marketing - The Ultimate Guide )

Hey Wentzco. Many thanks for your reply, its much appreciated and thanks for the help and information, you have given me some excellent points to think about and action. That is really interesting about the use of infographics. I think that this type of marketing on pinterest would really work for my business as the product that I provide is not exactly a visual one. So I think infographics would be an excellent way to illustrate the benefits of my business through a visually driven platform such as pinterest. That's a definite point to take action on, so thanks again. I really like what you say about the longevity of pinterest pins. Thats really a unique selling point as far as a marketing platform is concerned its pretty annoying how quickly a post on facebook, twitter or instagram pretty much just expires no matter how much traction it initially gains. It definitely makes a good case for putting a lot more though and effort into pinterest advertising campaigns or pins, as opposed to the disposable post and tweets of facebook, twitter or instagram. Thanks for the link to the pintrest marketing guide. I'm definitely going to have a good look at that before I get started. Thanks again for all your help.

I haven't paid to advertise yet on Pinterest, but I get some good organic traffic from Pinterest. I do pin a lot of good content on there so that helps. If you put in the time it can lead to some good organic traffic.

I do plan on doing some promotion on Pinterest sometime in the future. I will at least try it out for awhile to see if it is paying off.

Hey Funtobesocial. Great name by the way. That's really interesting that you have achieved some success in marketing your business on Pinterest without having to use the paid option. I think I might try something similar myself. I think i'll go and sign up for myself first and investigate the site from a purely user only perspective and maybe ill start to see some returns this way which would be an absolutely ideal situaltion. I would suggest to use facebook for that purpose.I have a friend who is a wedding planner as well as a professional photographer. He uploads short clips from the weddings with perfectly synchronized wedding themed songs in the background to uplift the viewer's experience . In the first week of his launch he got 5 new clients based on that strategy. But I have to make one thing clear that it all depends on the region where you intend to target your audience and he was lucky enough to have that

It all depends on your demographics.

70% percent of Pinterest users are females from US. Mid 30s with middle class to higher income.

Is this demographic relevant to your service?

Best advice, look for each social demographic and then pick the best relevant social network.

PS: what is your business? Maybe we can come with a better advice.

We have a business Pinterest account which is frequently visited, but yes you're right! Most of the visitors are from the US which is not my niche market! I did not know of this before now

Pinterest is considered very high when it comes to having "buyers" using the site.

Search on pinterest using keywords related to your niche and see what you find. You may find that many people are already using Pinterest to promote their sites and products. Quality pins and yield good results but it takes time.

Pinterest has over 70 million users and it is also an important social area network. It can be used to drive large number of referral traffic to your website. Pinterest is better for some brands, products, and services than others. 60% of top brand companies have a Pinterest account. Pinterest relies heavily on visuals and the marketers can use eye-catching images to not only drive large number of users to their website but they can also use these visuals for better brand communication.

For me .. Pinterest only good for promote around about article or website ... not for bussines for real life... If I have bussines like Yoga Class, Gym .. I prefer chosing facebook and Instagram..

  • As others have said, it all depends on your targeted audience, Pinterests works mainly with US females, so if your audience is outside of that segment, I wouldnt spent much time there.

I would say however that Pinterest can be a great place for driving traffic to your website, and improving your SEO, if that is also part of your strategy right now, I would try that approach.
