LinkedIn Salary: Have some serious doubts about it!

Just heard that LinkedIn has launched a new feature called LinkedIn Salary. First of all, I have to say this is something I can freely classify as the obvious deja vu. I think that almost every headhunting or job search website has this option. They even work the same way. So, if you want to see how much a salesman or a copywriter earns in NY or anywhere in the world, you have to disclose your salary related info first. This is your ticket in. You trade your personal information to get some other relevant information in return. Now, if you a Premium and paying user of LinkedIn, then you can access LN Salary with no need to disclose your job payment information.

This is supposed to be a great way to get an insight about salaries for the professions of your greatest interest. When you put it on a paper it really sounds great. You can compare depending on the level of experience and location. However, I can tell you first-hand based on my personal experience of using job search portals that you are very likely to be disappointed. Have you ever met a person who was totally honest about his salary? Even your closest and dearest people avoid this topic. This isn't necessarily a bad or an unacceptable thing. This is something that should be treated as a private and confidential information. The biggest trouble is that when people leave their salary-related info online, they tend to exaggerate. I really don't know what could be the reason for this data manipulation. Maybe they are ashamed I really don't know. The catch is that this process is supposed to be anonymous. As a user all you get is an average value. So, do you really have to lie about your salary?

Apparently, there are dozens of millions of users from the USA and Canada who are thrilled with this idea and they are already feeding the system of LN Salary with some useful data. We shall wait and see. Yet, my word of advice is that LinkedIn Salary is something you should definitely take with a grain of salt. Maybe there are some warriors and passionate LinkedIn users who feel and think otherwise. Let's hear them.
