Is it the responsibility of facebook to monitor whether the content that people post is fake?

Theres been a fair bit of heat on facebook after the election - some of it self imposed - the criticism of it being that it provided a medium for false news and misinformation to spread.
Personally I dont think that its facebooks responsibility to ensure that everything that others post on their website is true. I think it should be on the people themselves to think critically enough to make their own minds up, given the credibility of the source, and other factors. Does anyone think the same?

Yes there are people out there who use this source to spread fake propaganda. The thing is that how literate are you are to make a sound judgement and differentiate between the good and bad? That's what matters the most .

I think FB should have a limited duty to monitor the content that is posted intentionally to deceive. Though, I don't think they should be held responsible for it because there's simply too much to watch for. They have to do their best to act on reported content diligently.

This is an interesting debate, I believe its a very complicated thing.

The easy question is yes, Facebook should definitely start to control and avoid fake news from getting published, but can they really do that?.

Every minute, millions of posts are made around the globe, you could Facebook possibly review them all to avoid fake news? its kind of impossible. And even if it were possible, it would also raise a lot of discussions regarding censorship.

  • While do agree in the freedom of expression but not to the extent where fake news starts influencing sane minded people negatively. Some censorship on facebook's part is really necessary especially post US Election 2016. Though Mark Z. may be right that facebook did not influence the election in any way but there are many who will disagree. It is not at all about the election, fake news have been on facebook since 2014 I guess (I started noticing since 2014). Monitoring news (instant articles included) is an extremely difficult task but not impossible.
