Facebook targeting, how do I actually do it?

So there are tons of variables in ecommerce from landing page, CTA, ad copy, pictures, etc. From my perspective, I have done a good job on these areas. So I am attributing my failure to my targeting.

I copied the setup and ad copy of ads that get great engagement. But I am getting like no results.

I am selling men's accessories, but females can where it too.

Targeting Options: (Choose one?)

1) Target Interests that your niche likes. Brand about Travel/Adventure: Target Hiking, Travel, World wonders, etc.

2) Target already established brands as audience

These methods are all intuition based, aka I'm going to lose a lot of money first. How do I get raw data of people who are most likely to buy?

I am dropshipping from China, so I don't know if targeting other established brands is a good idea, because I will be labeled as a knock off and once they see that China package...

For demographic you can use big brand data.
You can search on Google about "Niche + media kit"
Usually big companies provide media kit for advertisers and affiliates.
Media kit includes demographic data about the customers/audience like gender, age ..etc. Also, sometimes it includes some data about the interests of these people.
They provide this kit to help advertisers and those who want to promote their products.

      Example of using Media Kit:
Suppose that I want to target "Baseball" niche to sell some baseball products or training courses.
I went to google and searched "Baseball + media kit"
I've found some baseball sites and stores. Here is the data of one of the media kits I found:

      Gener: 65% Males; 35% Females
      Median Household Income: $59,000
      Median Age Slowpitch: 48
      Median Age Fastpitch Youth: 14
      Median Age Fastpitch Adult: 34

For the interests, you can target competitors' audience.
If you know the competitors and can find them in FB interests, it will be perfect.
If you can't, then search about similar competitors/brands that provide the same product as yours.

You can use Google Keywords Planners, it will give you a lot of interests idea to target with FB.

In fact, your product seems too specific and I could not find media kit for "Anchor Bracelets". From my search, I found that "Bracelets" are usually under the "Jewelry" category. Also, it relates to fashion. I've found many media kits for fashion and jewelry stores.

You said your product is most likely for men but women can use it too. I recommend you to search about some popular brand that specialized in men's accessories/fashion, then check if they have media kit. Use the recommended demographic in their media kit to target your audience in FB ads.

Note, some media kits provide info about income. So, if you found income data in the media kit, you can use these data with FB ads and choose your ads to appear only to people with certain income .

      Hope that helps

Check the age group setting option, Are you targeting the right audience age group? Do some fashion demographic research regarding who else can buy your product.

Well you have to do some research work on google regarding the related items, like if you are selling men's beach wear , then who can buy your product, the people who live across beaches or the people who have interests such as surf boarding, water sport and like wise. this will give you some idea.

  • How to identify your target market? You look into who can afford your products. What's the average age of the people who would normally buy anchor bracelets? What kind of people would buy them? Where are they normally located. You need to answer these questions first. Once you have the answer to these questions, just plug in that information into your Facebook targeting.

How do I find this out though? I am just going by assumptions. Where do I actually get this raw data?

Ok, thank you. I know how to make an ad on Facebook and all the technical aspects. That's the easy part. My question is, how do I find the right target audience or demographic?

Here is a really good infographic that covers FB targeting options.

While demographics are very reliable, the interests may not be spot-on.

You can see what facebook thinks your interested are by viewing your ad preferences.
