How can I become a social media expert?

I have a background sales and account management, and I'm looking for a new job after a year of working on my own projects. I've been looking for a position that will enable me to use my sales, SEO and project management skills that I've picked up over the years in building my own portfolio of niche sites and managing outsource teams. It seems like make positions fit the bill on the sales, SEO, and account management, but then they throw in a line like:

"Are you a Social Media Wizard that also Loves to Sell?"

or

"Increase our exposure using Facebook and Twitter"

Right now, I wouldn't be able to give an example of how I used Social Media successfully as either an employee or as an entrepreneur. I never really got into using facebook and/or twitter since it seemed like my friends were wasting so much time on them. I would always prefer to spend my time learning SEO or working on my side projects.

How could I improve my knowledge enough to be considered an "expert" or at least to be able to list it as one of my skills? Is there a course or something that I could take to fasttrack a bit?

Thanks,
Chad

Just say you're one. That's worked for everyone else in the field so far.

Also, when a prospective employer asks you what kind of return on investment you've gotten from your social media work, glance out the window and say, "Oh look, a squirrel!"

I know how you feel ...

After being a print newspaper publisher for thirty years, I suddenly find the entire industry collapsing from the digital publishing invasion of the Internet.

But don't worry, I discovered very quickly that pretty much everything I learned over the years in print publishing transfers quite easily to the Internet.

Just have confidence in what you know. Believe me, just as King Soloman said thousands of years ago, "There's nothing new under the sun ... "

Enjoyed the posts. Very true, all. The one thing I still have problems with is "expert." It is so overused as to be meaningless anymore. Especially meaningless when someone uses the term about themselves.
And Please stop bumping two year old threads.

Attending events is a great way to meet people in the social media industry. Start finding blogs that are practical and helpful. Subscribe to their feeds and use a feed manager to be able to keep yourself updated.

My advice is to go out there and waste some time like your friends did to get some experience. Subscribe/read rss feeds from the likes of Mashable, Social Media Examiner and econsultancy.

There are plenty of bloggers out there. Google for top 10/top 50 list and you'll get a lis tof people to follow.

I think the most important thing is to use the above tools to get a feel for them and to put into practice what you've read/learnt.

Create Accounts with Major Social Media websites. (Business Page/ Account, if possible)
    Add friends
    Join Related groups
Create your own group and Invite people.
Update these accounts on daily basis, or else you will lose your fans.
Share something relevant & interesting in your account.

Tip: Just start doing it, ideas will automatically come into your mind.
    Gud Luck

Contrary to what most people believe, learning Social Media is not very
difficult. All you need is a bit of common sense, a positive attitude, ability
    to build and sustain relationships.

If you've never really used Facebook or Twitter for social media projects, you won't be considered much of an expert or have much to offer to a potential employee. And, I'm sure you realize that is why you are trying to learn now. So the best way to learn is by actually using these sites and studying what other big name companies are doing on the site.

Read relevant social marketing blogs that talk about the latest social marketing techniques for Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and Pinterest. Apply the techniques you have learned.

Work to build a portfolio of social marketing clients (perhaps that you gain on a Fiverr type site).

This will help you when seeking larger paying clients.

If you just want to be able to put the title of "social media expert" on your linkedin profile or a resume, then just go read a book about social media.

If you want to actually become an expert and make "real" money with social media by providing services to clients, then you need "Time", "Effort" and "Education".....just like any other profession....
