Facebook: FREE Secure (SSL) Facebook Fanpages

How To Get Secure Facebook Fanpages Today

On October 1, 2011, Facebook will require all iframed pages, applications, etc to be served on Facebook through secure servers. Now, while at first this may seem like an obstacle, it's actually an opportunity.

Most business owners won't know what to do about the new Facebook change and many don't even know its coming.

So What's The Big Deal About SSL (Secure) Fanpages?

Many Facebook users (myself included) have enabled Secure Browsing so if your iframe fanpages are not served through secure servers, they aren't visible to those Facebook users; at least not without their direct intervention.

In order for someone with secure browsing enabled in Facebook to view your unsecured fanpage, they get a pop up asking them if they want to default to a non-secured browsing session. Most often the answer will be no.

SSL certificates can run you $50-$100 per year (per domain) depending on where you get them. That's cost prohibitive for many people so I ran across a simple solution.

Social-Server.com

The website is self-explanatory and it allows you to securely deliver your fanpages through their SSL server in less than five minutes for FREE. At this time, there are no ads served on your fanpages although that could possibly change in the future.

For the moment however, if you aren't ready to invest in SSL certificates for each one of your fanpages, you may want to give this a try.

What's The Catch?

Good question.

The guy running the site says there isn't one. He's a Facebook developer trying to help other developers out. Sounds too good to be true but there are some altruistic people out there who feel your pain and just want to help.

Sounds promising for many who may struggle with the fees that are going to be imposed on us FB'ers.

Definitely something to think about, but maybe there is another solution?

Thanks for this though, food for thought.

If all you need is an ssl hosted page why not use Amazon s3 since you can use their SSL?

You actually need S3 & the EC2 instance server to setup a dedicated Ip to make it work. There is an issue with the request and Facebook so it won't actually display the facebook page. You actually need to setup another page on the instance server to go out and grab your fanpage. Using the url for the instance server rather than the direct fanpage will make it work. Unfortunately, although S3 is free EC2 is not. You will pay less getting your own low cost dedicated cert.

Interesting... facebook mucks it up eh?

I use Amazon s3 every day for SSL hosting files used on my on secure order pages. It makes a great low cost secure image host as well... all without EC2.

Too bad Facebook does not work well enough to do the same with static pages on s3

OK..as Sir Thomas has said.....Namecheap is well...cheap when you use their hosting for a SSL.....I can attest..I have Namecheap..

and yes..You can also use hostgator's SSL....just read an interesting article on how to do that for free......you just need to be on their servers..

And if marketers aren't paying attention to their business..well..all I can say ...is shame on them!! Duhhh..that's only laziness

It's only been known since when...3 or 4 months ago?? duhhhh...

Namecheap offers SSL for around $9/year and if you buy any of their product (like a domain name), it is $1.99 for the first year and $9/year thereafter.

Also, if I understand correctly, you can use a FREE "shared SSL" from your hosting company like Bluehost or Hostgator...

      Hi,
      Some point to remember;
      1. When using a cheap ssl like this it is for a single domain only. It will only work on the main domain and folders under that domain such as www . domain.com/page1 etc. If you want to use it on all subdomains you need a wildcard SSL which could cost you +- $97 a year
      2. Using shared ssl is not such a good idea as if you want to access say the wordpress site or site you access it something like this https : //secure123.hostgator.com/~mysitecpanelusername/ (if you using hostgator)
      3. The above address is which you wordpress install will look like as you cannot access the site directly anymore. It is OK for facebook but not accessing you site using a direct domain
So basically it seems a SSL on a single domain or wildcard is the best way

Forgot about this as for some reason I thought it was Nov so have to sort my pages out

Yup, I'm not exactly understanding why people are gonig nuts over having to spend maybe up to $100/year. Most certs cost you about $60, so that's $5/month - we're talking one grande cappuccino per month!

Actually, you can install the WordPress HTTPS plugin, and you'll be able to access your regular, unsecured site with it's domain name, and your facebook pages can be accessed using the shared secure URL. I've tested the plugin using my shared SSL on IX Webhosting (the-site-name.cp9.ixwebhosting.com) and I'm able to easily access secure content that way.

If you are with Hostgator and on the Business plan, it comes with a free SSL and the dedicated IP you need.

Yes, the SSL is only good for one domain but it will cover that domain and any sub directories so if you are using WP for your client's fanpages and perform a seperate install in different directories, according to Hostgator, this will cover it.

Even if you are on the baby plan, the upgrade to business is only 4 bucks a month for the SSL, dedicated IP and you even get a free toll free number to use. They also install the SSL for free.

Yes, the shared SSL method could be a little messy. I already tried to play with it :-)

If you host your clients' fanpages on one domain, you should be fine with cheap solutions like the ones provided by Namecheap. Or as you mentioned, wildcard SSL for subdomains. ($89/year from Namecheap)

You don't need to invest for EACH fanpage, unless you host every single one of them on separate domains...

If you host them on one domain, you only need ONE SSL certificate.

    Good suggestions, here.

But those who are not "in the know" may be in for a big shock in October when this kicks in, and I wonder how many will be too lazy to make sure they have SSL?

My bet is there will be a lot of business owners who get angry when their custom fanpage design is not being seen anymore because the internet marketer they hired had no idea about this and is not around anymore to serve them.

Will be interesting to see some of the threads in a month!

It's amazing how little news there is out there for this. If you aren't subscribed to Facebook's developer blog, you might never hear about it until your pages quit working.

If you're using WordPress to power your fan pages, I wrote an SSL tester plugin: wordpress[dot]org/extend/plugins/wordpress-https-test/

And should should absolutely load WordPress HTTPS - it works really well for using WordPress on shared SSL (yes, you CAN do it!) and for enforcing SSL for all your content on either shared or dedicated SSL.

For our users, I wrote a pretty lengthy post about going secure here, buty it'll apply to anybody needing to go secure, whether you're using WordPress for fan pages or not:

    SirThomas,
Nope, not my plugin, but a very lucky find! There are maybe two or three SSL plugs for WordPress, and this one actually works.

I did write WordPress HTTPS Tester for checking and finding that rogue unsecure content.

IX is set up differently than HostGator. HG (and bluehost) gives you a main domain, then all your other sites are in a directory under that one - making it hard to set up dedicated SSL on a site under the main domain if you want to do so later.

If you ask me, it also makes a potential mess by having everything under one directory.

IX creates a completely different directory per domain, you get 15 dedicated IPs, and site configuration is actually pretty easy. Shared SSL also works very well. I have their pro plan for about $100/year. They do use HSphere instead of CPanel, but I have no problem with that - works for me!

      I host with JustHost.com.
Bought SSL Cert from GoDaddy - $12.99/year
Had to get a dedicated IP for the domain I want to install SSL - $19.99/year

With JustHost, you can install SSL yourself.

Total cost: $2.75/month. Works with and without www.

I think Hostgator can install a private SSL on addon domains, but I know what you mean. Their reseller program would probably work OK, because each domain you create will have their own cpanel and can be on it's own IP.

    Hi Anthony,

My Fan Pages are independent HTML pages and not linked to WP.

I tested the solution you sugested and it worked immediately. It took 10minutes only. THANKS !!

But I'm afraid we're becoming dependent of a 3rd party. When the usage is so heavy, it might cause some issues.

Sooner or later, it is important to use our own SSL Cert. Getting one next week for my ecommerce server. So would squat my FB pages in there.

I'm trying to piece together all the info on the Facebook SSL requirements, but as someone just starting an offline biz, I am still a little unsure about some specifics, as I'm sure others are, too.

      My situation is:
      -Hosting with Hostgator baby plan
      -Domains registered with GoDaddy
-storing all fan pages in a folder of a single ADD-ON domain
-some WP fan pages, and some not

      Questions:
Does the shared SSL work only with the main domain, or with all add-on domains?
Getting my first 2 "real" clients this week (one for a website+fan page+mobile)--should I upgrade to the business or reseller plan, or just keep using this set-up?

Basically, can I use the simple shared SSL solution or need a private one--and if I need a private one, does it get installed on my main domain and work for all add-on domains, or do I need to install it on the single add-on domain where my fan pages reside?

I don't want to complicate things if I don't have to, but I also want something that will handle all those paying customers coming soon.

      Thanks!

If you're running WordPress based fan pages, then it's looking like GoDaddy's shared SSL is not going to work - at least with the testing I've done. It may be in the way they have it set up accessing the content with your username appended to the end like "~yourUserName".

Shared SSL probably won't work on subdomains either then. If you're going to be supporting clients, then it may be time to upgrade your tools - you're services will only be as good as the platform and hosting! It'll only take a couple clients to easily cover the additional costs.

After all, if you're going to be reselling/hosting clients, you're passing on your costs to them and hopefully charging a yearly maintenance fee, yes?

Basically, can I use the simple shared SSL solution or need a private one--and if I need a private one, does it get installed on my main domain and work for all add-on domains, or do I need to install it on the single add-on domain where my fan pages reside?
If you get a single domain dedicated certificate, it'll cover THAT domain only, and it has to be an exact match (your-site.com is not equal to www.your-site.com).

There are more expensive solutions like wildcard certificates - they'll cover *.your-site.com where * is any subdomain, and then multi-domain certificates to cover mulitple domains - then you're talking $500/year+

If you need to get a certificate for each domain, then a host like HostGator or BlueHost that uses the setup of one domain and all others are subdirectories will force you to get a new account for each domain that's going to need a certificate.

The quick solution for fan pages would be to get a generic domain or set up a subdomain on your site (fanpages.your-site.com) and get a cert for that. Then any content on that address will be secure.

        Hope that helps!

@kcfried--thanks for the detailed info. I did upgrade to the reseller plan. HostGator tech rep told me a cert would cover a domain and all subdomains. I think that contradicts what I've read here, though. I like the idea of the fanpage subdomain. Heroku.com but you have to learn how to use commands like GIT, CLONE, etc... from your command line [cmd.exe] using the Start button - remember DOS? It's like that...confusing but it's totoally FREE if you check the Hosting box in the Basic Developer App Settings.
Don't waste time on the mentioned url, fbssl.co. They turned to be a paid service and giving you the hope to get a free server but they not giving any reply no matter how many times small developers try to reach them. I had wasted a lot time wait their reply more than a month repeating emails! The only thing left there is £40 ebook waiting someone to purchase. Try this even better solution than fbssl,
        Code:
        https://es5.my/fb/index.php
        .
