How to get into Social Media Marketing for Businesses

Hi all,

Today I have few "confusing questions" for you guys. They're confusing because I myself am not sure what I should be asking and where to start and where to end?

Anyways, I was giving it a thought for days now and I think, some warriors here might comeup with what I need to know, so here goes. Before I start, I am just a regular IM guy (entry level) and I have never played with SMM, but now I'm seriously looking to get into it.

Questions:

I want to know how I can start a social media campaign for any business using techniques that really work.

What exactly does it involve to know if I want to enter in SMM?

How long should I wait to see results coming?

If you think these are noob questions, I already warned you in the beginning...

With respect mate you do need to know the basics concepts of the 3 big players (twitter, facebook (fanpages) and linkedin before you can market these to businesses. Of course you can outsource the actual work but if you don't totally understand the different socail media outlets I'm unsure how you can market them to businesses. While small business owners will pay you well for social media they'll also ask you some key questions like why do I need twitter/facebook/linkedin? How will it work for my business? And you can get some more tech savy owners that will ask more technical questions.
So I suggest you do a search at the top of this forum for threads about each different social media platform and do some fast learning before you start trying to sell these.
    Good luck.

      Thanks all who replied.

Rich, that is exactly what I want to learn. I do realize the power of FB and now Linkedin, but I have no clue as to where to begin this learning process.

  • First of all make your pages in Facebook and Twitter and link you site. Also place your link in your G+ profile. Then you can try finding people talking about your niche. There is a really great source in Twitter and you can be very active their. Another way is to make some ads targeted to your audience in FB.
Another good way is LinkedIn,from my experience I know there are many really active groups, where you can join in discussions

      Thanks Nino.

Actually, what should be my learning/strategy if I want to use LinkedIn and Twitter for my business (excluding Facebook for now)?

I also heard about Google+1. How are results so far from this platform?

    1. Search this forum for how Twitter, FB, LinkedIn, Video and Blogging work (they are all social media.

    2. Check Inbound University. They offer free resources on social media marketing and also certification. You will learn a lot there.

    • I agree with other posters suggesting you need to get to grips with the platforms themselves. Just a little more to add...

Understanding how to use the platforms is one thing, but actually having something to say is another. The platforms (Facebook, Twitter etc) provide you with an outlet to advertise your product, service, promotion etc but you need to ensure your messaging is correct. Nothing turns off social followers more than badly worded posts, spammy, duplicated content, bad grammar and spelling etc.

You should also be prepared to engage in conversation. Social media should be social; a two way street whereby you are communicating with your audience on a level of mutual respect.

You then need to learn from your posting strategy to gain a clearer understanding of the type of posts that yield high levels of "likes", re-tweets, shares, comments and link clicks. Social media monitoring is a valuable part of the whole process.

If you don't know where to go and how to go, I would suggest to have a check on your competitors. Do competitor analysis and check what they are doing and how they are leveraging.

  • Push out content from your blog/website to as many Social media channels on a consistent basis. You will start seeing traffic. Its about brand building and interacting with your customers. Try different things for engagement like contests...its a slow marathon you just have to keep at it.

There are many ways to do this but competition is quit stiff. You need to first build a social presence for your personal social accounts. Take before and after Screenshots and create a case study document and start soliciting businesses. There are also some tools online that allow you to get rewards for promoting business products or services. Some of these are free to join and others are at a cost.

a lot of the SMM workers are doing a lot of spam when trying to reach established businesses

if you can write long, in detail, personalized for each business, you will stand out
and many times they will contact you back and you can turn them into your clients

Easy, a 10 year old can be a Social Media Marketer. It just requires TIME. TIME, TIME, TIME. Time = MONEY.

Do you know how to sign up for GMAIL? If you know how to sign up for GMAIL that's about all there is to it. Then you just have to figure out how to use Facebook, G+, Twitter, which won't take a long time at all like a week or so if you put in the time.

You just slap your product all over the internet any way possible through Social Media. It's not brain surgery. Anyone who is computer literate can figure it out.

Instead of posting up pictures of your favorite meals on Facebook, you post up your product/brand on a daily basis. That's all there is to it.
