The Death of Email & The Rise of Social Media

Warriors!

Check out this blogpost and tell me that email marketing is dead! On the contrary, it seems that email marketing is on the rise and year after year in spite of guru's telling us it's dead! It is in fact alive and thriving!

Look - big businesses invest heavily in their email marketing campaigns and survey after survey says they believe email is still king!

And study after study proves that consumers trust email!

http://directoryofezinesreview.net/t...ng-really-work

Some really cool facts are cited in the blog:

  • ROI on email is insane! $40 for every $1 spent? Can anyone do that with Google AdWords? I don't think so!
  • Webmail usage might be declining among teens but it's just being replaced by mobile usage!
  • Year over year email volume is on the rise
  • Businesses are consistently telling us "the money is in the list".
I bring this up because I've been experimenting more and more with different stuff. Especially with Google being all Googliey (you know how those California boys are!).

And I want to share with you the "technique" that I'm using to make some nice cash online. It's really simple:

Step 1: I guest blog, syndicate articles and link back to my landing page where people opt-in to my list.

Step 2: My auto-responder sequence kicks in and whenever I update blog content it goes through Aweber and notifies my list.

Step 3: People thank me for all the free content, think I'm cool as hell and on occasion buy something I recommend.

Now, if you've had a hard time getting traffic on to your blog let me share with you two killer methods. And Warriors - don't screw this up by letting too many people know of a good thing ;-)

  • My Blog Guest (myblogguest.com) - great for getting guest blogging opportunities.
  • Press Releases - I do free press releases to prlog.org and also pay a guy to syndicate additional press releases (gets them onto Google news)
That's it. Try out the above two - it does require your time and effort but you will get traffic to your website and you will get some great people onto your list!

    Hi Williams

Email marketing still works. It's a good asset to have as affiliate or product creator. I'm planning to deal with it soon but a friend of mine is killing with it. Gurus are using it. It's their first arsenal.

Email marketing provides traffic on demand and when there is a product launch those who are dominating launch contest have huge lists.

    It works!

10 years down the road and you'll see the
    sentence... "Social media is dead!"

Seriously, every medium has died tons of
    times - but look back...

They haven't. Not even mailing has!

It doesn't make sense to say a source
    where people are has "died".

Everything works - it just takes a different
approach from the usual... and that's also
    normal, because times change.

You cannot expect things to go still...

So adapt! That's how marketers are made.

      Hey William

Completely agree with you! Email marketing is alive and kicking. We need not go far, just look at the big big launches we are seeing on the warrior forum. Most of these launches are built around email marketing campaigns. Yes chances are the hardware used to access the emails have changed drastically over the last few years. Today instead of a desktop PC, email are being accessed on ipads, mobiles, netbooks and what not, but that in no way takes away the credibility of email marketing.

      Nice post, thanks for sharing!

Yup - some technologies have certainly died off on the Internet. I don't see people using Usenet newsgroups or ftp sites hosting a lot of software. And certainly the likes of Facebook & SMS have changed how we message each other.

But email will evolve and we need to keep up with the change.

After reading the research cited in that blog post I think it's important to make sure all my emails are mobile friendly and the sites I link to are also mobile friendly.

        Most definitely!

There are big changes in the game, and
as marketers, we're going to need to
        keep up.

For example, Google itself has completely
        WARPED the way people read...

Back then, we scanned in larger "bytes"...

This time, we have far greater ADD than
before. We scan in smaller bytes and
        have a shorter attention span...

We speed-read, and zoom in on certain
        keywords extremely fast.

        That's why it's getting harder!

    Hi William,

I agree that email marketing is here for the forseeable future and is a big asset to any business. All the big companies use email marketing so why not us?

Guest blogging is an awesome way of building authority and a following in your niche. Send out an email once a week to notify of a new post and you'll further build the relationship you have with your list.

    Cheers.

    Hi,
I thought so, to convince customers to buy products, we must first build trust. To do that, to build the list. Set up an email marketing campaign on this list.
Back to building list, the most effective way is to create a squeeze page. Attract traffic to the squeeze page with blog comments is a good way, but perhaps should adopt various methods to optimize efficiency.
    It is my opinion

    theres no surprise there

email marketing is alive and kicking

there sometimes may be ways of getting people to use better email addresses ie like the ones they use for facebook and stuff, but thats a whole different story

but the main thing is that email marketing is certainly still super effective if done properly

its still one of the best ways to very high conversions and wont be going anywhere any time soon

so the next time someone makes a "email marketing is dead" thread just laugh and swiftly move on and ignore it :-)

Thank you for your post, I am really going to delve into this. I think my personal problem is I really hate emails trying to sell me something. I delete them, often dont read them at all, or even partly. So I think my own personal reaction to emails selling something is that other people must feel the same way. Well, no they dont. Sure some will be like me but it seems like many are fine with the concept. I guess I need to adjust my thinking.

Our small biz is myself, husband and son, and we are working on developing a blog which would tie in with our paint chip repair kits and would link back to our site and hopefully get us more sales.

I appreciate you posting this and the link.

Yes - I hate getting emails too which is what turned me off initially. But I started paying attention to my girlfriend's online habits and saw that she really was influenced by email.

      - She loves Groupon. Can't get enough of the daily deals.
      - She subscribes to a guy who sends articles and video blogs on caring for parakeets - she'd buy anything from the guy
      - She's also on several fashion lists where she's sent info of what's on sale

Pretty powerful stuff. Not everyone thinks like us jaded marketers.

Email marketing is alive and well... and so is pretty much everything that Gurus tell you isn't working anymore.

Have you noticed that Gurus tell you such-and-such isn't working but their system that you must buy is?

If e-mail is dead why are all the gurus still using it?

Telling everyone something is dead is just a ploy to get us to change our focus and buy a course on the latest thing be it social or something else.

As everybody has suggested Email marketing is certainly not dead. If it was all our lists would be useless.

However I do believe that email marketing has taken a peek and gone slightly off the boil. I mean it is a little less effective than is use to be a couple of years ago. I think that people have received so much spammy stuff that they are very particular to how much time they take over any particular email these days

Therefore I believe that it is more than important than ever to build the best relationship as you can with your list so that your emails are taken as seriusly as possible

However email marketing is still profitable

    Hi,

There would always be a rise and fall of everything.

The fall is not "dropping dead" but rather stabilizing to a plateau.

I have so far avoided Social Media for personal discourse and correspondence. I prefer the more private nature of one-to-one email.

My main concerns about Social Media are risks to Privacy & Security.

Seriously, Social Media is useful for business development and social networking as well as sharing general matters only.

Tread with extreme caution, though. Or otherwise strategic matters, business secrets and embarrassing moments would be leaked and become viral world-wide. It could be severely detrimental to the "victim", even if it is a FUN and EXCITING share to others.

Today, most people rely or depend on social media sites more when it comes to promote businesses online or stay connected with friends, colleagues and others. However, this does not mean that we are ignoring emails. Are we? I regularly check my Inbox to get updates or news. I believe almost everyone does the same. This proves email is not dead. May be its usages have decreased. Social media sites are the latest form of communication. So, enjoy the new one with full respect to its predecessor.

At the recent MediaPost Email Insiders Summit in Florida, this whole discussion was put to bed. Those who push the message that email is dead have an agenda -- to promote another channel.

The fact that they miss is that email is social! Anytime two humans interact, it's a social interaction.

You can't even sign up for FB or Twitter or any other network without an email address and both those entities have increased, not decreased their email updates.

In fact, email was the first online social channel.

It's a waste of time to fret about one network dominating another. Think more about communicating effectively across multilple channels. We marketers may be pulling our hair out worrying about what is and isn't the "in" channel, but I assure you, customers could care less -- they're more concerned about the value of the message regardless of the channel it arrives via.

    Regards,
    jim

PS: I should also mention that far from killing email (in favour of SMS for example) mobile seems to be reinvigorating it in a big way.

Social networks are doing very well and effective as well but I don't think that can really replace email. The appeal of email marketing is still as it was. Instead of giving up one to take another, I like to take both if possible. Social networks opened a big door but not stopped another door that is email.

Us as marketers have to take our emotions out of it and realize that email marketing is a strong form of communication. If people really want to hear from us and get our ideas, tips and strategies then they will use a good email address.

Like others have also said above... millions and millions of cell phone users have connected their home email address right to their phone so no matter where they are they get their emails instantly.

Funny thing is when your phone makes that "bling" sound to alert you of a new email you're automatically wanting to check it just to see what it is and who it's from.

My wife spends a ton of money at The Body Shop and every Sunday there goes her phone with a new email from them. Most times she ends up buying something on sale... LOL

Email marketing is far from dead ... it will never die ... it's just one's approach that needs a little work!
