Does social media hamper your business?

Be honest now, have you fallen into that trap of feeling you have to check FB or your email every hour or so? This can really hold you back because it never stops there. You end up having to reply or another distraction creeps in with an interesting post.
I used to do this all the time until one day I made the point of timing myself every time I visited a social media site throughout the day. The results were shocking.
Now its first thing in the morning with my coffee and in the evening when my scheduled task are finished.

Social Media is a double bladed sword, it can work for you or against you. Glad that you managed to get everything sorted out.

It's a little tough for me since my actual work is almost completely within social media networks. What's difficult is actually finding time for me instead of my clients! When I had a, gulp, Corporate Job, for a couple of years people would walk by my office and see three monitors all on a different SM network and invariably say the same thing, "Are you on Facebook again?" Then giggle and leave. Funny thing - before they hired me they had only 11% inbound calls. 12 months later it was 27%.

Obviously, most of my day as a community manager is spent on social networks, but it is critical that I manage that time. Everyone has their own addiction when it comes to social networks. For some it's FB and for others it could Twitter or Pinterest or forums such as WF.

As you say, you have to develop a routine and stick to it or you will waste a great deal of time on the poison of your choice .

I set up all my content curration in the morning and then just pop in and out to monitor the conversations and participate through the balance of the day.

Here's an interesting post from Biz insider on being organized in general for biz.

Yes it did hamper my day for a while, but I have a few projects I'm working on that I have been doing research on for marketing and I find that my connection to FB has been a lot less lately. I also got caught up in a few of the games on FB that had me hooked for a long time but have since become bored with them and lost interest.

To be completely honest, Facebook and other social media networks (mainly Twitter) is hampering my time management. I check Facebook and Twitter once in a while, but if I look back and if I would cumulate that ‘once-in-a-while’ time, I am very surprised, how much time have I actually wasted on nothing rather than focusing on my project. However, it is crucial for me to limit this and focus on my work and daily routine.

Yes the Warrior Forum does get addictive. There is so much helpful information around. You could spend the whole day here. The trouble would be remembering what you learnt and where?
I always thank people who have good informational postings that we can all learn from.

I actually chose social media as my profession for this very reason. If i am going to spend so much time on these sites i best find a way to make money doing it.

Admitedly i do get distracted but most of what distracts me is industry related anyway so i see it as time invested.
