So I want to make a contest to get more likes for my Facebook page. My niche is birdwatching I have 1 bird feeder to give away.

What do you all think would be the best format for this kind of contest to get the most likes?

The first thing you need to decide is how you are going to run your contest. Building an app is the most popular route. If you have a reasonable level of coding knowledge, then this is something you could do yourself. However, there are plenty of companies our there that can build apps specifically for running a contest. Strutta, for example, is $199/month. There are more affordable solutions, too - with Easypromos your first contest is free and subsequent contests cost $15.

Even if you can code yourself, it is worth considering getting an app built. Not only is it a time saver, it has other benefits too, like localising your contest to the language of your visitor.

It is best to keep your contest as simple as possible, especially if it's a first effort. Whilst it can be tempting to add a twist to try and gain some viral traction, there is a risk that rather than making your contest more interesting, you will just add an unnecessary element of confusion.

I'm probably going to use Shortstack for app. What format for winning and stuff do you think would get the most virality whist keeping it not confusing?

I would run a 'funny pictures' comp, these are fun and pictures can go viral real quick on social media sites.

Maybe: funniest picture involving a bird feeder wins!

Maybe not funny pictures because I don't have a large amount of likes so far and I doubt many people would enter...How can I make it so that I get a bunch of new likes? I'm only at 356 right now...

356 is a good starting point if they are real likers. Why not send an FB message asking them to post a link to your page as their status to grow the list, funny picture contests can go viral, people will share funny ones they see with their friends and your likers could explode.

You could always go down the 'Get me some likers' type competition where anyone who gets you say 10 new likes gets entered into the competition (hard to monitor though)

Take advantage of Shortstack and your 356 Likes by running a contest as mentioned earlier where people can upload pictures of the funniest, the largest or the most unique bird house (I would maybe make this more broad or include more than just the funniest bird house to get more people involved) and then have people vote on them so your contest and pictures go viral, while gaining more Likes.

What you need to do is create a contest tab, and then advertise the contest on Facebook ads. Have the ad point directly to the contest tab. People have to like your fan page to enter the contest.
This gets you more likes .. lots and lots more. And it also satisfies Facebooks TOS which states that a contest must be done with a 3rd party app.

You can find Facebook apps without a monthly fee here:

Thanks for the tips guys! All the likes are real people (not bought), but I still don't think any of them will participate if they have to post a photo...

Hey you've also got over 300 twitter followers (not sure if these are the same people but I bet at least 100 of them are not).

You have a good base to run a competition, if you want to PM me I will give you some more specific advice/guidance if you wish!

356 fans is a good start and if they are real people as what you mentioned, they will join your contest. They liked your fan page because they are interested about you can offer them or mainly of your page.

Running a contest is a great idea and I am sure that you will gain more likes because of that.

You can also check Facebook groups that talk about the same niche you are in. Communicate with the admin and see if you can promote the contest that you are running..

356 fans is definitely a nice no, and you will definitely get entries for your Contest. Also you can ask your fans to share your idea amongst their friends. This might help you get some more fans.

I have run many contests on facebook for myself and clients. Look at what's not right now, pics.
Picture contests are huge. Shortstack is pretty good.
Do not run your contest for 30 days unless you are going to constantly entice people to participate.
The contest rules are the most important piece of legal you'll need. You must also comply with Facebook's tos.

The most successful contests are done with a launch sequence. Prelaunch fodder, launch promotion with the right images as promoted posts and post launch and contest end post too . You want the people who missed it to be really upset so they will not want to miss it. Explain in excruciating detail how they can get more points or increase their chances of winning.
