Facebook Search Engine

Relying heavily on "Likes" and other social features inside of Facebook, the network is announcing something called the "Facebook Graph Search"

You ready to get started in a new type of search? I sure am!

For all of us that have already started up Facebook pages, we're already one step ahead of the competition and closer to higher rankings.

Of course.. it's not a traditional search engine, it's a "social search engine" which means it's highly dedicated to users, versus extreme algorithms like Google/Bing.

What do you think...

The death of the traditional search engine.. or not?

Share your thoughts.

Update: Facebook search will integrate Bing into search results as well.

Announcement: http://newsroom.fb.com/News/562/Intr...ph-Search-Beta

Update 2: Mark Traphagen also shared some great thoughts on this matter as well, of his responses I had to share this one...

But what about a search with more commercial intent?

Let’s say I’m looking for the Mexican restaurant nearby me that my friends think is the best. So I search on Facebook for “mexican restaurant nearby that my friends like.” And Facebook gives me a list of the most popular south-of-the-border eateries, according to my Durham NC area friends. Perfect, right!

“These are not the search results you’re looking for.” (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
Not so fast. Those “likes” by my friends, remember are Facebook Likes. And Like on Facebook may not always mean what you and I mean by “like” in the real world.

In the real world, if my friend Matt says, “I really like Sol Azteca in Morrisville.” It’s reasonable for me to assume that Matt means that he “likes” Sol Azteca because of their great food, and maybe other relevant factor like their atmosphere and service.

But what if Matt has “liked” Sol Azteca on Facebook? Does that Like necessarily mean the same thing?

Very often, it probably doesn’t. “Like” on Facebook can mean all sorts of things, and indicate all kinds of intent.

It's a different kind of search for a different kind of result. Definitely not the death of the "traditional" search engine.

I don't view it that way either In fact I find it as a way to improve search in different areas. Search engines are great for looking for extremely specific things, but when it comes to local results.. I would personally prefer to trust Facebook results.

Let's say I want to find a local pizza shop that my friends enjoyed.. since we have the same tastes it's better to go the Facebook search route.

The same could be said if I wanted to see what type of motorcycles my friends like, the could give me a better idea of what type of motorcycle is best suited for the roads in my general area.

I think it's just a fun different way to narrow down your searches. I'm all about filtering when I google anyway and now I can get very specific down to which of my friends liked a certain city so I know where to travel, a certain movie that I might want to check out, a bar that I might want to go to, etc. I agree that I don't see this at all replacing the basic google search, though. I feel like this was always coming down the pike based on all of the web integration facebook has made over the past couple of years...

I say its more hype than anything at this point and near future. Nothing will beat just asking for recommendations right in your status update. You will get specific information from your friends.

True, but for instant gratification I think it could be good. Again, I think this will be more fun than function but who knows, Facebook is good at being underwhelming but this could end up being surprisingly useful...?

I definitely don't think it'll be the end of search engines at all. I believe the vast majority of people still go onto social networking sites just to socialize and kill time. They then use search engines to do research still.

This will not even be close to replacing any type of traditional search engine. The first reason is simple, it relies on Facebook. It is similar to having a search engine in any other closed environment, you can only search with in that environment.

Now there are going to be Facebookers that will enjoy this feature to their social networking platform and it is possible that it will be refined to become more useful in the long run.

Currently, there is no way to just the value of a "like" on facebook and all likes are treated equally. So with all likes being equal, the only deciding factor is "quantity" and quantity never is a great representation of quality. Until there is a quality factor introduced into the Facebook like feature, then there is no true way to tell if the results you are getting are useful or fake....

This new search engine feature reminds me of the early days of traditional search engines that relied on basic factors to rank information. Where as long as your X was more than your competitor's X, you were ranked higher. Now that X will be Facebook likes....

Also Facebook OWNS all the information they are ranking. This ownership is a not the best thing either though since as an end searcher, will never know how Facebook is utilizing it's own system for monetary gains. They can easily put restaurant A above B for the simple reason of A has a larger AD spending budget a month and they want to keep them spending that money. Especially if they have the same amount of likes.

In the end, we will have to see what happens but I do not see this in it's current mentioned state as being anything more than a neat social networking feature that many Internet Marketers are going to use as a Plug to sell Facebook Fan Pages.

It is true that we'll have to see what happens, at the end, however business owners must keep in mind that FB has now more than a BILLION users, this is far from being negligible considering that users are also spending very MUCH time on it and making a LOT of search requests using FB, thus the very reason why they've developed this very powerful search platform.

Besides, to stay in business on the Net in the future one must understand the Social Graph concept that is developing right now under the Internet hood, the concept that establish the relationship between ALL social network.

Now, FB has on top of that implemented the Open Graph Protocol which allows WEBSITE to be part of the Social Graph as a Rich Open Graph Object, this is why it is important for all business website owner to be prepared and implement this RIGHT NOW on their web site as the Social Graph will soon, in a very near future, extend to much WIDER areas than just Facebook.

It enables and encourages social signals (shares, comments, and likes) within your content. Shares, likes, and comments appear to be significant drivers of Graph Search results. For certain brands and publishers, it is important to enable and encourage image sharing. Images are the single most popular type of content to be shared on Facebook. It stands to reason that images are something people will search for a lot through Graph Search.

I agree that the search is very limited and subjective, given that there is not 'quality' value placed on likes. However depending on the success of this new feature I can see it creating a vacuum where a valued 'like' is going to become essential to people. We may yet see the 'quality' of likes become crucial.

    I'm not gonna lie...

I honestly really don't like Facebook Graph Search, not because it's not useful, but because of how it appears. The old Facebook search felt comfortable, this feels intrusive.

I would have to agree. I think the concept is a great concept but it is too "app looking" with the icons and it doesnt feel smooth like the other. It is still in beta so they may play with the design.

It is a design issue. Not sure how they could fix it rather than just going back to a more familiar search feeling like the other one.

I think they need to focus on the white search bar inside of the blue top bar.

The blue on blue just feels odd and uncomfortable.

To be honest, I've used the search graph on a personal level once and didn't like the results I got, it wasn't as helpful as I had hoped.

However I do see the potential behind it.. we just have to wait and see.

There's no "link to the search engine" this is will appear on the top of FB pages once they go live. It is for now in BETA and you have to make a request in order to use it before anyone else.

Mainly only US users are accepted for now, however it depends on your implication level with them, for example if you are creating pages or developing applications etc., they might accept you. I'm in Canada I have access and know a folk who's in NZ.

      Check : https://www.facebook.com/about/graphsearch

I will say it doesn't look at comfortable as the old white search bar, but I can see why they wanted it to blend.. sorta.
