Facebook & Twitter Guidance

I have been asked by my Hotel & Tourism Association to give a presentation on effective use of Facebook & Twitter to market small hotels, guest houses, Bed & Breakfasts etc. I live in the Caribbean island of St Lucia.

Now while I established myself a few years ago as the local authority on social media marketing for tourism businesses I've been out of the loop for about a year - which is a lifetime or two in the internet world.

So I've come seeking advice from this forum since the best in the business hang out here!!

Please point me to online resources that I can read up on so that I can make a killer presentation that is relevant to social media marketing today.

BTW I personally believe that Twitter is no longer the way to go & that Facebook holds so much more potential. Please advise what other social media options are most relevant today.

Many Thanks in advance & I owe you all a pina colada or a margarita down on the beach at sunset when next you're in my neck of the woods :-) :-)

As for Twitter not being effective anymore, you touch on an interesting point here. I often hear people talking about how one network is more or less effective than another and that is really not the right approach to be taking. Instead, think about where your target audience is spending time. If your tourism market is not spending time on twitter then that is probably not a network you will focus on. By the same token, don’t just focus on a network because it is the “newest” thing or because a bunch of other companies are doing it. You should first “listen” on networks to see if there are mentions of keywords that are important to your goals, if people are having conversations about what it is you are selling and in general if it seems like a place you should be focusing your marketing efforts.

    Hope that helps,

I immediately thought... bring up other networks. Linkedin is probably a good place for tourism.. go where the money is!

Pinterest is a great way to upsell your photography to those clients.. especially since they'll need a steady flow of content.. that's a lot of pictures

Instagram is a traffic behemoth. Much in the same was as Pinterest but for the mobile market (which is of course huge), By uploading beautiful images of resort properties from your destination, and placing high traffic hash tags such as #beautiful #sunset #beach etc, you can get yourself a nice flow of traffic, and with the right optimization for mobile devices, and the right offers..... "instagram special 25% off of booking fees" etc. you can get some really nice conversions too.

    Cheers.
