getting forums ranked higher/ranked on google

i am the social media guy for Dan's Depot (dansdepot.com), and we have a survival forum (dansdepot.com/forums) which ranks for some of the thread posts, but don't rank on simple things like survival forums, survival forum, urban survival, and etc. what method(s) can i take to get my forum rank/ranked higher. my two big competitors are survivalistboards.com and survivalcache.com. both of these places are survival forums, and rank on the first page when you look up the couple of things i mentioned. any suggestions how i can rank somewhat higher, and get my forum ranked for those keywords?

    Hi,
    In order to rank high for keywords, you need to build High PR Quality Back links to that forum. Its Possible, but I cannot see a forum inside a directory of the actual domain name being ranked higher then forums on actual root domains, unless you are really good at SEO. Thus, building quality back links,
