What's the best day to send out a Newletter?

Hi guys, our ad exchange is getting ready for its first newsletter edition!
Any thoughts on what weekday would be the best to send them out? In terms of reader response and attention, it is recommended to be sent at the beginning of the week, correct?

Thanks for any advice!

    When your customers want one.

Which isn't an answer, is it? So let me explain. You have a slice of the population that is perhaps 0,5%. That means they are going to have pretty specific likes and dislikes that are not common to the rest of the population. Okay?

So you're in the dark. As I would be in the same circumstances. It's a fact of life. So send out your newsletter, and see when it gets opened. Add a survey and ask if there's a day they would prefer (and leave the box blank for them to put their own input*). You can also split-test, although this will take longer.

*Don't limit the characters below 2000 - some may want to take the opportunity to say thankyou or make suggestions. All of which is gold dust.

Thanks Moriarty. The survey is actually a very good idea, and you're right. I guess in the end it all comes down to readers' response. Just wanted to get started on the right foot, since we all know newsletters more often than not end up in the spam folder and i truly don't want this to be the case with ours; it's actually brilliant content.
Thanks again for the tip.. I'll definitely give it a try.

Because of the mixed nature of your subscribers and where they are from, this is a difficult one to answer.

For me - I send out a weekly email each Monday at 13:00 EST. My thinking behind this is its the first day of the working week for most people.

And the time, at EST it will likely be a few peoples lunch break. And GMT time this will be when most people are getting into the office for the fist time.

Lunch and first thing are good times - and people tend to look at their emails around this time.

    Hope this helps.

In my opinion it depends on your list: which niche, countries, age, etc. You should need to examine the demographics of your list and epxeriment the results.

Trial and error at this point!

To add to this, use a respected newsletter service such as Mailchimp, so as to make sure your newsletters don't make their way straight into the junkbox of your subscribers.

If you have a fairly global audience it'll be hard to time it well. Even if they are in the same time zone, everybody is different.

This article talks about it quite a bit. She basically concludes that there isn't much of a difference what time you send, at least for her list.

You would just have to experiment and see when you get the most opens and clicks.

  • I read somewhere that if you are targetting an audience that is business / workforce, the emails should go out first thing Tuesday morning, which makes sense to me.

As others have said, it really depends on the target market.

The latest research that I've seen indicates that Tuesdays are good for businesses but surprisingly Saturdays were also very good days.

This has to do with a lot of smaller businesses and of course regular people getting caught up over the weekend.

I'd stay away from Mondays altogether - yes, I like to go against the grain.

Mondays are usually the busiest day of the week for most marketers: catching up after a weekend, etc.

Too busy to read other people's stuff.

    Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday work best.

From my experience and from the biggest statistics, the most people are online Sunday between 6 and 8 pm.
Got my most results with this.
Its working for all sites, Facebook, youtube, blogs, just the whole internet.

I would avoid Mondays as I know that I get enough emails over the weekend and on Mondays. I would prefer it to be some other day, maybe a Tuesday or Wedsnesday if possible.

I always send out emails (scheduled) on Tuesday or Wednesday. Friday and weekends are a big NO NO for me and avoid Mondays since the open rates are low (may be readers are busy on Monday like someone said). My readers are mostly in US so I send it to them 9 AM US EST.

You should test it for your reader. Send one email on the weekend, one on Monday, another on Tuesday and check the open rates/click through. The results will give you your answer.
