How did sites like 9gag and Pinterest become popular?

I honestly have no idea where to post this but...

The obvious answer would be via social media marketing where everyone used facebook and twitter to share images and it became viral over time but are there any specific to it? How did they go from being this regular average website to becoming insanely popular and reaching thousands of people? How did people find out about those sites? Interested to know how a site can be born one day and reach millions of people over a period of time....what strategy is used, etc.

The owners already had a following from elsewhere. They just had to e-mail / promote their new site. 9Gag and Pinterest are also new and interesting, so the idea quickly spread. They must have had a lot of help, too.

They utilized facebook's API to invite your friends from Facebook to Pinterest... That is basically how they grew virtually..

Well there's a bunch of 9gag "alternative sites" as seen here. There's also this one site that is featured here. Question is....how do sites that are new and are competing against something already existing and familiar with people become...popular? There's the concept of making yourself stand out and doing something that is unique different from your competition from is there more to it?

Like joaquin112 already said, they had a fanbase before and just promoted it then. However if your product is good, it can go easily viral on social networks.

Sometimes, I find some funny photos like gags, etc when I want to see it, they require me to share by posting it on my timeline. That's how it will be more viral, IMHO

If only it was done that naively. The people ehind these sites are hardcore professionals. They don't just do a bit of viral work. Take pheed.com, it's twitter with pay to see tweet options. They made sure they signed up Miley Cyrus and Hilton plus a few others first to give it instant traction - not anyone can do that. So they are working in a different universe to the rest of us in terms of resources.
